Save Lives, Give Hope: A Plea to Save Wetaskiwin’s Shelter

The Issue

Petition to Support the Permanent Shelter Facility in Wetaskiwin

The lives of the vulnerable in our community are in serious jeopardy.  We need your help to ensure that our shelter is not shut down and a permanent shelter facility can be built, providing live-saving care for our unhoused and vulnerable neighbours.

We ask you to stand with us to save our shelter - this is ultimately about providing live-saving care for people in need and making our community a healthier, more compassionate, and welcoming place to call home.  The time to act is now!  Please review our petition and provide your support.

To the City of Wetaskiwin,

We, the undersigned residents of the City of Wetaskiwin, come together to express our strong support for the establishment of the Hope Mission Permanent Shelter Facility in our community. This much-needed facility will serve as a vital resource for individuals experiencing homelessness in our city, offering them shelter, meals, showers, clothing, and comprehensive wrap-around support services.

The Hope Mission Permanent Shelter Facility will provide a maximum of 60 beds to people experiencing homelessness. Beyond the basic necessities of shelter and sustenance, this facility will offer an array of services designed to address the complex needs of our unhoused population. These services include health services, connections to addiction treatment and recovery, social supports, housing supports, and other supports provided through third party providers.

We firmly believe that the establishment of the Hope Mission Permanent Shelter Facility will have a positive impact on our community in several ways:

  • It will provide a safe and dignified space for those experiencing homelessness, helping them transition to more stable and self-sufficient lives.
  • Along with the 24/7 Hope Mission Rescue Van, the shelter will reduce the demand for service on law enforcement, emergency medical services, fire department, the Wetaskiwin Hospital and Care Center and other health providers.  This will allow them to focus on other critical needs in the community.
  • It will improve the overall quality of life and sense of community in Wetaskiwin by addressing the issue of homelessness and its associated challenges.

Therefore, we, the undersigned, respectfully request that our city officials and decision-makers give their full support to the establishment of the Hope Mission Permanent Shelter Facility. We believe that this facility represents a significant step towards a more compassionate and safe Wetaskiwin, where everyone has access to the support they need to rebuild their lives.  The time to act is now, as Hope Mission has been operating in our community for many years and has secured the funding and resources needed to build this facility.
