Save Leach Botanical Garden by securing funding
The Issue
In the midst of East Portland, despite the bustling streets and urban chaos, lies a sanctuary in the form of Leach Botanical Garden. For many of us in this traditionally underserved area, finding tranquility is more than a luxury—it's a necessity. Personally, I have walked the serene paths of this garden many times over the years, raising my son amidst its vibrant meadow, tree walk and Johnson Creek. This garden has provided not only a safe and peaceful environment but also a place for families, like mine, to rejuvenate and connect deeply with nature. The thought of losing such a haven is deeply unsettling.
However, our beloved garden is in dire need of immediate financial assistance. The city of Portland holds the power to prevent its closure by allocating $450,000 from the mayor's budget. Such a sum, though significant, pales in comparison to the invaluable contribution this garden makes toward community wellness and cohesion. Leach Botanical Garden offers more than just scenic beauty—it hosts community programs, educational tours, and events that foster environmental awareness and cultural richness. It serves as a communal space where the diversity of Portland's residents can gather and celebrate our shared love for nature.
According to Eric Vines, Leach's executive director, "The city has already invested millions of dollars in the garden’s creation. Leach Garden Friends raises two-thirds of the operational budget every year, and it would be a shame to lose the garden's many-faceted benefits because we can't find $450,000 somewhere in the city budget." Thus, we urge the mayor of Portland and District 1 City Councilors to act decisively and safeguard the future of Leach Botanical Garden. By integrating this valuable site into the city's financial plan, we ensure that countless families can continue to experience the peace and joy it offers.
If you, like many of us, believe in protecting our local treasures and preserving green spaces for future generations, please lend your voice to this cause. Sign this petition and help us keep Leach Botanical Garden open for all those who seek solace, inspiration and community connection within its gates.
