Hello, friends and neighbors!

It's been a few months since my last update and we have reached nearly 1,400 signatures since I started this petition in February. I'm pleased to say that from all the news I've seen, Leach is in a much better standing than it was at the beginning of the year!

Here are a few highlights I wanted to share with links for more information:

  • The footbridge was replaced in April! I visited with my son and we were delighted to have renewed access to the stone cabin, outdoor kitchen and walking trails.
  • The East 5 is due to open in July!
  • Honeybee hikes are back!
  • Fundraising has been successful and the garden is able to stay open (with reduced programming and hours) for the next 14 months!
  • Mayor Wilson, the District 1 Councilors and Portland Parks and Recreation did advocate for Leach and made a one-time donation of $200,000.
  • Read more about what's happening in the latest update on the Leach blog!

The whole purpose of this petition was to raise awareness for Leach and get the attention of city leaders. While the city was not able to provide substantial annual support, I believe this petition along with all the community efforts and donations played an important role in helping carry our beloved garden toward a new era. To that end, I will be closing out the petition and declaring victory at the end of June.

One last note: Leach is in the final days of a $25,000 Matching Challenge to hire a gardener in July. As of June 18th they are $5,843 away from reaching their goal which closes on June 30th. Please consider a donation at this link: June Matching Challenge.

Thank you all for your care of Leach, for sharing this petition with your friends, contacting local leaders and hanging posters around town. This effort has been deeply rewarding as I've seen the signatures pour in from my own neighborhood and around the world. Gardens matter!

Your neighbor,

Julia Neises
