At last week's City Council meeting, we learned that a plan for a micro hospital will soon be provided. How does this differ than what we have now?

The Laguna Beach facility is 105,813 square feet with 137 general acute care beds on a campus that includes a 6-story tower. Nine years ago, the emergency department planned expansion was completed, thanks to a $10 million dollar donation by locals Bill and Sue Gross: https://www.coffman.com/portfolio_items/providence-mission-hospital-laguna-beach-ed-expansion/

Micro hospitals are usually 15,000-50,000 square feet with up to 15 inpatient beds, and must meet the same legal, operational, nurse-to-patient ratio, and structural standards as a full-sized general acute care hospital. What would this proposal mean for the current ER? What other services would be offered to ensure long-term viability of a 24/7/365 emergency room? Would such a plan ensure that when other hospital emergency rooms are overloaded that patients could be treated here and visa versa? Would it be sufficient as the County gets built out?

Only 1.8-2.5% of Laguna's population lacks health care insurance but with more than half the population over 50, it needs access to a hospital here--not elsewhere--just as our millions of visitors do along with our neighbors in Dana Point, West Laguna Niguel, Capo Beach, etc.

Mark your calendars: Thursday, November 16th 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Laguna Beach City Council Chambers, 505 Forest Avenue for the Hospital Task Force meeting where the Providence Proposal will be discussed. Can't make it? Record or watch it live on Cox Channel 852.
