Latest Updates on Pranab Doley’s Case & the September 11 Protest
We want to share two important updates from the Save Kaziranga Movement concerning the ongoing detention of Pranab Doley and the events surrounding the September 11 protest.
Next Hearing: 24 September
The next hearing concerning Pranab Doley’s detention under the National Security Act (NSA) is scheduled before the Gauhati High Court on 24 September.
The previous hearing was scheduled for 14 September, but the matter could not be heard after the government representatives sought more time to submit their affidavit. The Court directed the government to submit the affidavit by 22 September, stating that it could not allow such a long delay in an NSA case.
The Gauhati High Court had earlier issued notice to the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Assam Home and Political Department concerning the legality of Doley’s detention.
We will continue to follow the proceedings and keep sharing updates as the case develops.
Warrant Report Concerning Soneswar Narah
We are also concerned by reports that Bokakhat Police are threatening Jeepal Krishak Shramik Sangha (JKSS) adviser Soneswar Narah with a warrant over his participation in the September 11 protest against Pranab Doley’s detention.
Pranab Doley was granted bail on 29 July, but the Assam government subsequently invoked the NSA against him, preventing his release. His detention is now being examined by the Gauhati High Court.
Peaceful protest and democratic dissent should have space, especially when people are speaking up about indigenous rights, land, livelihoods and the protection of Kaziranga.
