Street cats still have a hard time in many Mediterranean countries. However, “Kalithea Cats” is THE flagships sanctuary for cats on the Greek vacation island of Rhodes. Over 200 spayed/neutered stray cats live here in freedom and find a unique refuge in a clean, well-kept environment where they receive regular food and medical care. For more than 16 years – we as a dedicated group of volunteers – have provided essential care, shelter, and love to animals that would otherwise be left to suffer. 

Recently, the forestry department has made requests that threaten the future of these cats and the sanctuary they call home. A document sent by the Directorate of Forests of the Dodecanese to the volunteer cat care group responsible for the operation of the shelter was very clear: All structures must be demolished and be removed.

While we understand the importance of environmental management, we believe there is a humane and balanced solution that can protect both the natural landscape and the animals that live there.

Kalithea Cats is consistently ranked among the top tourist attractions on Rhodes, and the presence of the cat sanctuary enhances the island’s positive image, drawing visitors who are not only interested in its natural beauty but also in the compassionate work being done for the animals.

The sanctuary has never sought or received any support from the local government of Rhodes. The necessary funds have always been and still are entirely raised by tourists from around the world, either through direct visits or donations made to the veterinarians who work closely with the group. 

Therefore we urge the relevant authorities to: 

1. Withdraw Kalithea Cats' eviction action and leave the cats in their usual home so that the cats' welfare and lives will not be endangered. 

2. Work collaboratively with Kalithea Cats to find a solution that prioritizes the welfare of the animals while respecting environmental regulations. 

3. Recognize the invaluable work that Kalithea Cats has done for the community and the animals.

Straßenkatzen haben es in vielen Mittelmeerländern immer noch schwer. Doch „Kalithea Cats“ ist DIE Vorzeige-Auffangstation für Katzen auf der griechischen Urlaubsinsel Rhodos. Über 200 kastrierte Streunerkatzen leben hier in Freiheit und finden ein einzigartiges Refugium in einer sauberen, gepflegten Umgebung, wo sie regelmäßig Futter und medizinische Versorgung erhalten. Seit mehr als 16 Jahren bieten wir - eine engagierte Gruppe von Freiwilligen - den Tieren, die andernfalls dem Leid überlassen wären, die notwendige Pflege, Unterkunft und Liebe.

Kürzlich hat die Forstdirektion des Dodekanes einen Antrag gestellt, der die Zukunft der Katzen und der Auffangstation, die sie ihr Zuhause nennen, bedrohen. Die Forstbehörde hat der ehrenamtlichen Helfern, die sich um die Auffangstation kümmern, eine sehr eindeutige Anweisung zugestellt: Alle Befestigungen, die die Auffangstation ausmachen, müssen abgerissen werden.

Wir sind uns zwar der Bedeutung des Umweltmanagements bewusst, glauben aber, dass es eine humane und ausgewogene Lösung gibt, die sowohl die natürliche Landschaft als auch die dort lebenden Tiere schützen kann.

Kalithea Cats gehört zu den beliebtesten Touristenattraktionen auf Rhodos, und die Katzenauffangstation trägt zum positiven Image der Insel bei und zieht Besucher an, die nicht nur an der natürlichen Schönheit der Insel interessiert sind, sondern auch an der hingebungsvollen Arbeit, die für die Tiere geleistet wird.

Die Auffangstation hat nie Unterstützung von der lokalen Regierung von Rhodos beantragt oder erhalten. Die notwendigen Mittel wurden und werden vollständig von Touristen aus aller Welt aufgebracht, entweder durch direkte Besuche oder durch Spenden an die Tierärzte, die eng mit der Gruppe zusammenarbeiten.

Daher fordern wir die zuständigen Behörden dringend auf:

1. die Räumungsanweisung von Kalithea Cats zurückzunehmen und die Katzen in ihrem gewohnten Zuhause zu belassen, damit das Wohlergehen und das Leben der Katzen nicht gefährdet wird.

2. mit Kalithea Cats zusammenzuarbeiten, um eine Lösung zu finden, die das Wohlergehen der Tiere in den Vordergrund stellt und gleichzeitig die Umweltvorschriften respektiert.

3. die unschätzbar wertvolle Arbeit, die Kalithea Cats für die Gemeinschaft und die Tiere leisten, anzuerkennen.

GREEK VERSION

Οι αδεσποτες γατες στην Ελλαδα δεν εχουν ευκολη ζωη !!

Πολλες ειναι αυτες που ταλαιπωρουνται καθημερινα ητε στην αναζητηση τροφης και νερου ητε να ανταπεξελθουν  Στις αντιξοες συνθηκες του δρομου !!

ωστοσω στη ροδο υπαρχει το καταφυγειο γατιων της Καλλιθεας το οποιο εδω και μια εικοσσαετια φροντιζει πανω απο 200 γατες καθημερινα.

Τα ζωα εκει ητε αρρωστα ητε μωρα βρισκουν την φροντιδα και την θαλπωρη που τους στερητε στο δρομο !!

ολες οι γατες στειρωνονται και φροντιζονται απο τοπικους κτηνιατρους !

Δυστυχως το Δασαρχειο Ροδου θελει την αμμεση απομακρυνση του καταφυγειου τωρα γιατι λεει πως δεν αρμοζει στο δασικο περιβαλλον .

Οι γατες που ζουν εκει ξερουν τον χωρο τους και δεν θα υπηρχε μεγαλυτερη καταστροφη απο το να μεταφερθουν αλλου...Αλλα και που αλλου ??

Το γατοσπιτο της Καλλιθεας καθε χρονο προσελκυει χιλιαδες τουριστες οι οποιοι ειναι ξετρελαμενοι με τις γατες αλλα και τον χωρο και ετσι αφηνουν ολοι τα θετικα τους σχολια για το νησι της Ροδου.

Ποτε στα 16 χρονια λειτουργιας του το Γατοσπιτο δεν εχει λαβει την παραμικρη βοηθεια απο το Ελληνικο κρατος η τον δημο της Ροδου.

Η περιθαλψη οσο και η σιτισση αλλα και η κτηνιατρικη περιθαλψη ειναι εξ ολοκληρου εργο των εθελοντων και μονο!!

Ετσι λοιπον ζηταμε να 

1. Να μεινουν τα ζωα στο χωρο τους και να σταματησει η οποιαδηποτε μελλοντικη απειλη απομακρυνσης τους ¨.

2. Να γινει συνεργασια με τους εθελοντες για την ευζωια των ζωων αλλα και για τις περιβαλλοντικες εργασιες  στον χωρο.

3. Να αναγνωριστει το εργο που γινεται απο τους εθελοντες στον χωρο.

Σας παρακαλω η Υπογραφη σας ειναι υψυστης σημασιας για τα ζωα αυτα καθως κινδυνευουν να χασουν αμεσα το μοναδικο τους σπιτι
