Kaipara Climate Action Inc have asked me to forward on this message about the Kaipara District Council's Long Term Plan.  As it relates to the climate change adaptation programme I've agreed to do this.

Kia ora! Last year, the Kaipara District Council voted to scrap most of its climate adaptation and mitigation funding without consulting the community. 

A number of people in the community, along with Lawyers for Climate Action NZ Inc raised issues with the Council's decisions and the way they were made. The Council has now decided to bring the issues to the wider community for consultation as part of their process of consulting on a new Long Term Plan.

WHAT IS THE LONG TERM PLAN?

The Long Term Plan is really important as it sets the Council's strategic direction and work programme - usually for the next 10 years (though the current LTP is setting the direction for the next 3 years.) 

One of the questions the Council is consulting on concerns its CLIMATE MITIGATION AND ADAPTATION FUNDING.

One of the options under that title that the Council is considering is for NO dedicated funding for a climate resilience work programme. The Council indicates in its consultation document that this is the option currently included in the draft budget and is the Council's preferred option.

WHAT CAN I DO? 

The best way to stop the Council failing to fund any climate resilience, adaptation, or mitigation funding is for as many people as possible to submit on the Long Term Plan in favour of ✅ OPTION 3, which provides some funding for climate adaptation and mitigation work.

As a team we have worked on an easy way to submit on this specific part of the Long Term Plan.
