SAVE Jim's at the Mall - A Greece, NY Staple Worth Fighting For!

The Issue

May 13th Update: Thank you to everyone who has signed and shared this petition - your support has been powerful and meaningful during this. After many conversations, it’s now been confirmed that Elena, the owner of Jim’s at the Mall, has made the difficult decision move forward with closing the diner’s current location. This choice comes after of back-and-forth discussion about potential relocation within the mall and other options. As with any business situation, there are two sides to the story. We’ve heard statements from both Wilmorite and Elena, and we understand that the situation is complex. Regardless of how we got here, we want to continue showing our support and gratitude to Elena and her team - for the decades of service and for the love they’ve poured into this business. We are also very grateful to Jim Boscov, CEO of Boscov’s, who reached out personally and spoke with both Elena and me after hearing about this situation. He expressed sincere care for the community and was supportive of the petition. He offered multiple options to help, including to help Elena’s employees who are losing their jobs by providing opportunities when the new Boscov’s location opens this fall. His response was kind, respectful, and community-focused - and it’s important to make clear that Boscov’s is not the problem here. In fact, we are hopeful for their success in Greece and look forward to supporting their store. As we look ahead, our hope is that Elena finds a new location in Greece to continue serving this incredible community. In the meantime, please continue supporting Jim’s while they remain open for the next 2 days, and thank you again for using your voice to stand up for local businesses. Jim's on Main: 785 E Main St, Rochester, NY 14605 _____________________________________________________________   Jim’s at the Mall has been a part of the Greece, NY community for decades - originally opening in 1967 as Critic’s at the Mall by George Criticos, and continuing under the dedicated ownership of Elena Knapp since 2016. The space is not just a restaurant, but a legacy of family, resilience, and local pride. Generations of families have eaten here. It’s where we bring our kids, meet our friends, and share countless memories over pancakes and coffee. When other local diners have closed, Jim’s remained - adapting through fires, relocations, and changes in mall ownership. Most recently, Jim’s was assured they could continue operating elsewhere in the mall. They were told they must close for good by May 15 to make way for Boscov’s, with no viable relocation option provided. (EDIT 5/6: Jim's needs to be out of the space by May 31st - so they are closing on the 15th to start removing all of their inventory etc.) According to Jim's, they had planned on moving to the old Aspen Dental near CubeSmart Storage that would have been renovated for them.  This is unfair and unjust to a small, locally owned business that has anchored the community for nearly 60 years. We, the undersigned, respectfully request that Wilmorite Management Group and The Mall at Greece Ridge take the following action:  Honor the previous assurance to relocate Jim’s at the Mall within the property Delay the closure deadline to allow time for a fair resolution Recognize the value of preserving small local businesses within community spaces As we have seen in the mall, big box stores come and go - but local family-owned businesses like Jim’s are the heart of the community. Let’s work together to keep it beating!   Why Jim’s at the Mall Matters to Me: Jim’s isn’t just a diner - it’s a part of our family’s story. We visit almost every week. It’s where we go after church, after preschool graduations, after Christmas concerts. Every Christmas Eve, it’s tradition: breakfast at Jim’s with friends. I’ve been there through every season of life - dating, new-wed, married, pregnant, with newborns, and now with my kindergartener in tow with all of the cousins. My in-laws from Utah always look forward to visiting Jim’s when they come to town. They’re heartbroken they won’t get the chance this June. Their go-tos? The Elena Delight, the Calista Frittata, and the #2 Frittata. We love popping in for weekday breakfast specials - the Eye Opener or Late Riser with a hot coffee and a shot of juice are our favorites. And you can’t beat a good breakfast sandwich or a big bowl of grits. My kids always get excited to choose a muffin or see what’s on special that day! For lunch or dinner, I crave their creamy Seafood Bisque (gotta go on Wednesdays!) and my all-time favorite: the Fishamawhoozits with the best fries. The BEST Friday Fish Fry - have to get the fried ice cream for dessert!  But more than the food, it’s the people. We know the staff by name. We’ve made friends with folks who no longer even work there. We see familiar faces nearly every time we visit. We’re always greeted with a smile. The service is fast, and the prices are fair - a rarity these days. Jim’s is more than a meal. It’s memories. It’s community. It’s home. Please help us save this local gem. Sign the petition and share your story too. Let’s show The Mall at Greece Ridge that we support small businesses, and we want Jim’s at the Mall to STAY!
