Save IRSC swimming and diving programs

The issue

As an alumna of Indian River State College (IRSC) swimming and diving, the proposal to eliminate both programs is heartbreaking for current student-athletes, alumni, coaches, and the entire IRSC community. Being part of these programs means so much more than swimming laps or performing dives. It means being part of a legacy that extends far beyond the pool. IRSC swimming and diving have a rich history of success, shaping countless student-athletes through discipline, camaraderie, resilience, and the pursuit of excellence.

The proposed elimination of these programs threatens to dismantle a historic legacy that brings pride to the college, the local community, and alumni around the world. The IRSC swimming and diving teams have consistently achieved national championship success, demonstrating the dedication, hard work, and determination of generations of student-athletes and coaches. These programs represent more than trophies and titles. They represent the opportunities, lifelong friendships, lessons, and experiences that define the IRSC student-athlete experience. Eliminating these programs puts this legacy at risk and denies future generations the opportunity to become part of something truly special.

Most importantly, these programs provide life-changing opportunities for current and future student-athletes. They offer access to scholarships, quality education, competitive athletic opportunities, and an environment that encourages personal and academic growth. For many athletes, swimming and diving open doors that may otherwise remain closed. Removing these programs takes away opportunities for future students to pursue their education while competing at a high level, developing leadership skills, and building a foundation for success beyond sport.

The impact extends far beyond the current teams. Alumni remain deeply connected to IRSC swimming and diving, and the program continues to be an important part of our identity, our memories, and our pride in the college. Preserving these programs means protecting the legacy of those who came before us, supporting the athletes who represent IRSC today, and ensuring future generations have the same opportunities to learn, grow, compete, and succeed.

We urge the Indian River State College Board of Trustees to reconsider this decision and explore every possible alternative before eliminating these programs. We recognize that financial challenges may be a concern, but we believe solutions such as expanding fundraising efforts, building sponsorship partnerships, engaging alumni support, and reviewing budget allocations deserve serious consideration. Eliminating programs with such a significant history and lasting impact should not be the first or only option.

Join us in protecting the past, present, and future of IRSC swimming and diving. Current student-athletes deserve the opportunity to continue competing, alumni deserve to see their legacy preserved, and future athletes deserve the chance to experience everything these programs have to offer. Together, we can stand up for a tradition of excellence that continues to bring pride to Indian River State College and its community. Please sign and share this petition to help protect these programs and ensure their legacy lives on for generations to come.
