Save Indiana PA Spencer's

Save Indiana PA Spencer's
The Issue
Spencer's Indiana PA Mall location is planned to close in January 2025 with no plans to open another location. Indiana does not have a Hot Topic or any other similar store to fill the void of Spencer's niche. There really isn't anywhere to buy band merchandise, alternative jewelry, or specialty accessories based on young adult interests.
What may seem like a trivial matter of an alternative store is actually the symptom of a much larger problem in Indiana PA and small-town America in general. There is a glaring lack of spaces meant to cater to teens and college age young adults. Indiana Pennsylvania is a college town and somehow will now have no stores to reflect the business of IUP students or really anyone in that age bracket.
Another role Spencer's plays in Indiana is their offer of adult products. There is a large sense of shame in purchasing sexual products, and Spencer's provides a location where these products can be bought with proper cleaning supplies- where all the workers are trained to tell people how to be safe and hygienic. For some people, this openness might make the difference of keeping them safe sexually and not injuring themselves or a partner with risky behavior. It can be very limiting and embarrassing to have to request that a Walmart worker open up the case so you can buy a sexual health product in a store.
Spencer's corporate has had an uptick in complaints about the closure, and so they have closed their online form. This survey seeks to fill the role of the closed online form to prove support for the Indiana location. The preferable solution would be to find a location for the store that is not the Indiana Mall. The Indiana Mall already suffers from a lack of anything to do besides Spencer's so there may be another spot in town better equipped for the business. There's no reason to close the business entirely and leave people without jobs when there IS clearly a demand for this type of business in Indiana.
