SAVE HORSES FROM SLAUGHTER- OUTLAW "KILL BUYING" & SLAUGHTER TRANSPORT IN THE U.S.
SAVE HORSES FROM SLAUGHTER- OUTLAW "KILL BUYING" & SLAUGHTER TRANSPORT IN THE U.S.
The Issue
I heard a story... An individual was driving along a highway in one of our 2 neighboring border countries. Suddenly this awful stench was in the air....followed by horrific screams and cries... of horses being slaughtered...
Has this stirred up any emotion in you? I'm not trying to upset anyone, but it brought tears to my eyes, and anger to my heart. Enough for me to come here and start writing. I am nobody, just someone who can't stand the injustices going on around us regarding animals. I've never wrote a petition before, but I know there are good people out there who feel the same, and want to do what's right. I can't stand to know this is happening, when horses are a part of American culture. I know there are a lot of causes out there, but why? Why do we allow this savage brutality?
Is it right that we, as a nation allow this to happen? When we CAN make a difference, if we stand united by getting as many signatures as possible. Hoping someone out there, who has America's ear will take notice? I know there's a lot of petitions here. I know some may not consider this a big deal. I know it's hard, I know people are going through a lot, but has respect, compassion, & awareness simply slipped away regarding these majestic, intelligent creatures who helped build our nation? Is this how we honor their legacy? I can't even...I wish I could forget the images I've seen...but I can't.
We generally don't consume horse meat in the U.S. as it is considered somewhat taboo, but there's a market. When I looked for information on the internet, one of the first headlines I read was, "Americas dark secret," ...Where there's a market and money to be made? We will unfortunately always find nefarious deeds being done. A brief internet search shows only some statistics. The last number of kill buyers vaguely recorded in the United States were 40 large-scale buyers. This was documented in 2023, by an animal rights activist in the U.S.... it's now 2025, and past numbers may not be even be accurate, considering there's no updates as of today that immediately come up. According to the ASPCA in 2023, more than 20,000 American horses were transported to Canada and Mexico (from the united states) for slaughter and consumption (This is a direct quote), but again, the numbers aren't exactly accurate, and it's 2025! While there has been attempts in legislation, it's still happening. We could look up numbers and statistics all day long. Those of us online who interact on social media platforms are often bombarded with heartbreaking videos uploaded by organizations asking for money to save these amazing animals from kill buyers. These buyers transport to Mexico and /or Canada. However, questions still linger regarding how many organizations are legitimate. There's no clear information regarding which are really helping save American horses. Often reviews are inaccurate, or it scares people off and they end up not donating, because many who would help are afraid that it won't be used to directly save the horse(s) in question, or we donate far less, because we're unsure. Praying they're doing the right thing. If the practice is simply outlawed. It would drastically reduce any underhanded actions and immediately stop any organization(s) from being questionable. Whether or not they're being 100% transparent, etc. It would simultaneously help the those who aren't doing anything nefarious, and in turn... allow the good one's to concentrate on simply helping these horses live. Organizations could the utilize funds for rehabilitation, rehoming, medical expenses, food/boarding, etc. I'm not disparaging any organization that is truly doing, "the right thing." But outlawing kill buying in the U.S. would eliminate the crux of the issue. Having to race to save these horses, using, "time is of the essence" stance. Which is too often the case regarding ALL animals suffering in the United States. Treating all animals humanely is a goal we as Americans could be striving for if we put the animal before profit.
Throughout history we've used them, raced them, competed with them, had them as pets, and in recent years something good and positive is equine therapy. There's factual evidence of the good which comes from horses helping the sick, terminal, seniors/elderly. So why aren't we doing this more?
We also see them being saved from horrific conditions in other countries, being used as workers, pulling carts until they drop, bleeding, starving, and in pain. Then left in some garbage pile thrown away like some used piece of garbage. Some, in very bad situations, but there are good people out there trying to help, trying to make a difference.
It's time to address legislation..
If legislation forced platforms across the board to "Vet" organizations/people before they're allowed to simply start uploading provocative, tear jerking, abusive video's? This would help stop the abuse and extortion. However, I will have to make another petition to address this matter soley in it's own right, and hold social media platforms across the board accountable. Unfortunately, many unsavory characters out there discovered, there is money to be made by uploading, "saving an animal" or "please help and donate" video's. Now, we are bombarded on a daily basis, trying to decifer which are genuine and which are staged. Some are just obvious, but nothing ever happens and they keep posting. While we are left to ponder what animal(s) are they going to hurt next in order to get views? Which is disgraceful in it's own right, but my apologies, as I've strayed from the conversation, but we need accountability and this is a start.
Horses are known for being loving, caring, intelligent creatures. Do you think they know when one day their lives are taken away and they're shoved into trailers being driven to this horrible fate? Do you think they know they're being driven to their slaughter and death? As its been documented how they gather together, scared and terrified? It is said horses are very intuitive. They instinctively know when a human is handicapped or has a mental impairment, or emotional pain. So why wouldn't they know when suddenly they're ripped from all they know and love? Their cries haunt me, and I've never even heard them. Only photos, and I am grateful to be spared from that for now. Just knowing that this, in fact does happen for profitable gain, is shameful and disgraceful. We owe them more than using them up, then when they no longer are of any use to us, they're thrown away like garbage, tortured and killed... sold to the highest bidder!
Please, I implore anyone reading this... horses helped build this country. They're seen in paintings, battles, wars, books, magazines, and even movies. Working side by side with men and women throughout history.
Let's stop this brutal killing and outlaw horses being sold at auction to be sold to slaughter houses. Let's stop transport and make it illegal in the U.S. Let's tell congress, no more! They deserve better, they deserve to be honored and loved, as they've more than earned their place by our sides since human beings rode them across the plains. We need to honor the amazing creatures that they are, and if necessary? Raise money to buy land and make an American horse preserve. Anything less? Is an embarrassment to this country! We should be ashamed of ourselves to allow this to happen. So let's do this for them... with them, and show them. That's the least we can do for the animals that help build this nation, and were here before us . If we don't stop this from happening? What does it say about us as a people? No more animal abuse, no more exploitation for profit, be a hero and sign this petition to outlaw kill buying and any transport for such purposes in the United States. If you sign? I promise you, I will do my best to get this out there... help me.... and we will address legislation regarding animals and our responsibilities towards giving them all the respect they deserve. They are a gift... how would we be where we are without them? Be a hero and sign this petition today!
P.S. I am not going to include graphic photos, you can go online and type in: Investigative Photos of Horses being slaughtered & Transported in the US. Unfortunately, there is more than enough brutality, more than enough proof...anyone who has the least bit of compassion can see for themselves... it's difficult to look at, but ... A myriad of photos which only shows us who we really are as a people. Stand up and start making your voice heard... please sign to save American horses and outlaw this barbaric practice. Thank you for your time and consideration.
