Save Historic St. Mary's Church!

The structurally sound 150 year old historic St. Mary’s Church in the Village of Pewaukee, Wisconsin is proposed to be sold to a developer (Jim Tarantino, Capri Communities) who will tear it down to build an imposing three to four-story senior living development overlooking the lake where St. Mary's currently stands. They're also proposing an absolute monstrosity of four-story buildings behind the cemetery that are completely inharmonious with the surrounding single-family home neighborhood. The proposed density is well beyond what's allowable for this neighborhood and this proposed development would completely forever change the fabric of our small town community and impact it in a very negative way.

St. Mary's Church has been approved for nomination to both the National and State historic registries and is a great example of Gothic Revival architectural style. St. Mary’s Church is one of the few historic buildings remaining in Pewaukee.

Let's get behind the community by supporting the efforts to thwart the demolition of this historic building in the heart of Pewaukee!

  • We ask that our public officials vote against destroying a piece of Pewaukee’s history worthy of protection.
  • We ask that the Village of Pewaukee public officials create an Historic Preservation Ordinance in compliance with Wisconsin Statutes, which would include St. Mary’s Church.
  • We ask that the Plan Commission and/or Village Board deny any PUD-Planned Unit Development or CUD-Conditional Use Development for the existing property that any developers propose.
  • In the spirit of “Loving Thy Neighbor”, being ethical partners in the Pewaukee community, as well as good Christians, we ask that Queen of Apostles Church sell St. Mary’s Church to either the current community-focused church or an historic preservation nonprofit with the stipulation that it will never be moved from its current location, nor structurally modified in a way that would affect the historic or architectural integrity.

The Village of Pewaukee Plan Commission and Village Board have the authority, ability, and even the responsibility to decline any proposed multiplex that is inharmonious with the character of the surrounding residential neighborhood per Wisconsin Statutes and local ordinances. There is a possible solution, however, that would still allow Queen of Apostles to sell off most of the property.  All of the land behind the cemetery could be sold for single-family housing, which we desperately need in our community, while leaving the church intact as the community desires.
