Petition Title
Save the Historic Louis Emerson House from ASU and ABOR Demolition!
Petition Target
The Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR), ASU President Michael Crow, and the Phoenix City Council.
Petition Description
We, the community members, preservationists, and residents of Phoenix, demand that the Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR) and Arizona State University (ASU) halt all plans to demolish the historic Louis Emerson House.
Built in 1902, the 124-year-old Emerson House is a rare surviving example of Queen Anne/Eastlake architecture and one of only a handful of pre-Statehood homes still standing in central Phoenix. Listed on the Phoenix Historic Property Register, the home is a direct connection to the city’s early streetcar-era neighborhoods and the working families who helped shape Downtown Phoenix. Phoenix has already lost countless historic homes and landmarks to redevelopment, leaving fewer and fewer physical reminders of the city’s past. While we support public health, education, and growth, progress should not come at the expense of our irreplaceable cultural heritage. A university known for innovation and design should be leading the way in adaptive reuse and preservation, not demolition. The Emerson House is more than an old building. It represents the character, history, and sense of place that continue to disappear across Phoenix. Once these landmarks are gone, they are gone forever. We urge ABOR and ASU to pause demolition plans and pursue a preservation-first solution that protects the Louis Emerson House for future generations. Sign this petition and help send a clear message that Phoenix’s history is worth preserving.
