The Issue

The National Grid Norwich to Tilbury pylons plan threatens many trees and hedgerows along the proposed route of over 100 miles through the countryside of East Anglia.

In Rivenhall, Essex an Oak tree estimated to be at least 300 years old (locally named Henry) and a stand of Beech and Oak trees nearby is directly under the line of the cables - we have been told by NG they will clear a 25 metre wide swathe under those cables.

There would be one of many 50 metre high pylons right next to this location, towering over local public rights of way.

There would also be a construction access road crossing Church Road Rivenhall at this point, with vast gantries put up either side of the road, one being right where Henry stands.

National Grid says (even while it is consulting on its proposed route), that it has not yet completed surveys for trees nor surveys for protected species. Bats are seen feeding every summer along the edge of this line of old trees.

Please support this petition to National Grid to help Save Henry and the trees nearby (that date from the C19th).

You can also make a direct representation to National Grid (look up Norwich to Tilbury route on the NG website) until July 26th. Many communities, councils and MPs are urging National Grid to properly consider an offshore option for the new electricity cables.

There is also a call to the local authority - Braintree District Council - to place a protection order on Henry and the nearby old trees.
