The Issue

For many of us in Yakima, the Harman Senior Center is more than just a building – it is a sanctuary of community, support, and activity for our seniors and persons with disabilities. Countless workshops and classes are available to help stimulate mental acuity and encourage lifelong learning. Essential services like health check-ups and nutritional counseling are also offered, ensuring the care of our Senior citizens.

This center doesn’t offer mere amenities, it offers lifelines.

Over the years, is has become a vital institution for countless people who depend on its resources for social interaction, wellness programs, and leisure activities as well as for physical fitness.

Closing the center would not only strip away these vital services but would also uproot the sense of community and belonging that seniors rely on. Considering the aging population of Yakima, with a significant portion of our community being aged 50 and above, the center’s existence is indispensable. By rallying together, we can emphasize to our leaders the profound importance of keeping the Harman Senior Center open. Let’s act now to protect this essential community resource for our seniors. Sign this petition to voice your support for preserving the Harman Senior Center for our seniors.

Despite its importance, Harman Center is facing threats of closure due to budget cuts by the City Council.  This decision would strip Yakima's residents of a vital community resource.

We urge Yakima's city council to reconsider its budget allocation. Rather than cutting funding to close the Senior Center, we propose identifying alternative funding options or reallocating resources to preserve this essential community institution.  Engaging local businesses, exploring partnerships with other existing institutions such as Perry Tech, Habitat for Humanity and Meals on Wheels.

Sign this petition to ensure the continued operation of Harman Center. Stand with us in safeguarding a space that fosters health, happiness, and unity in Yakima. Together, let's advocate for the future of our community and the well-being of all its members.
