Amnesty heard your voices! Our beloved second-hand bookshop on King Street is no longer threatened with immediate closure but will stay open, with our brilliant manager, Sonia Laso, in place to ensure that the store remains an inspirational haven for book-lovers.
The signatures, comments and donations of almost 3,000 supporters of our petition clearly made a strong impression on Amnesty International's UK Section Board. Following an Emergency AGM resolution in July, the Board has agreed to pause the management's proposed closure of four bookshops, including ours, while it conducts a fresh review of their contribution towards Amnesty's wider aims. This review is scheduled for February 2026.
We now need you to help us make the case for the King Street shop as a key element of the charity's advocacy for human rights. The more we can demonstrate that our little outpost raises awareness of and participation in Amnesty's vital work, the more likely we are to survive and thrive beyond February 2026.
Add your comments and ideas here, or come into the shop, browse our new stock, and tell us what you think. Amnesty is a membership organisation: if you join (and let us know) you too can influence its decisions. Onwards!
