Did you know about the call for public feedback on SG Climate Adaptation planning?
The Ministry of Sustainability and Environment (MSE) is asking for our views to build a long-term plan against climate change. Singpass login required.
Key focus areas:
• Extreme Weather: higher heat, heavier rain, floods
• Security: water and food supplies
• People: liveability and public health
So this public feedback was launched after the Gillman Maju announcements. But ultimately what we have been concerned about, isn't it? The same issues. The same risks. Precisely our worries about liveability and long-term needs for the next generation – except that this is an official program coordinated by MSE at the national level.

This official channel is a platform to voice our opinion on matters besides deforestation too. Anything at all that you feel should be taken into consideration for a 'climate-ready Singapore'. Have a thought about what this means to you and your family... and whether there are ways that the government should evolve to achieve this important goal.
It did not say how long this public feedback is open for. No deadline mentioned in the news.

I spent some time online to understand MSE's official views on climate change resilience. 'The draft plan lists biodiversity and greenery alongside heat, flood resilience, water, food, liveability and public health as focus areas. But the government has not said that protecting existing secondary forests will be an adaptation priority, or set a threshold for how much forest can be lost without undermining climate resilience.'
'An academic analysis of Singapore’s urbanization plans estimated that as much as 7331 hectares of secondary forest could potentially be converted to other uses over the coming decade — equivalent to about one-10th of the island’s land area.'
MSE seems to be very active participating in carbon credits internationally. The previous 30 By 30 Food Security program failed and is now moving ahead with an adjusted target. More recently, rollout of the recyclable bottle machines. Other than that, nothing else stood out to me in terms of sustainability. Though it has come to my attention that we've had a Government Chief Sustainability Officer since 2023.
Perhaps SG prefers an approach that builds its climate defenses instead of preserving existing nature solutions?? Or could there be an inter-ministry blindspot because MSE does not have land use mandate ? How about evaluating intangible assets & risks using the GEP and SEEA-EA method raised by the academia and several knowledgeable citizens. It has already been adopted in over 30 countries, including ultra fast paced economic-driven nations. So there is a way.
I have learned a lot from interactions and engagements in the past months. So many people have spent precious time and volunteered expertise engaging with the government. Singapore is the most highly-educated society in the world, according to some rankings. I believe the government realises this too.
