Save Galway's Commercial / High Value derelict properties
The Issue
Galway is widely celebrated as the cultural heart of Ireland, but when the sun goes down, our streets tell a completely different story.
Over the last decade, Galway has experienced a catastrophic wiping out of its nightlife ecosystem. Iconic venues that defined generations of students, artists, and locals from Central Park (CP's) and Cuba to The GPO/Carbon and Electric have been completely lost with electric being the only nightclub left.
Across the entire country, the number of dedicated nightclubs has plummeted from over 520 to roughly 80. Galway has borne the absolute brunt of this decline.
I am a property student, and I am launching this petition because I want to make a tangible difference to this city.
Studying urban development and commercial real estate gives you a clear, frustrating look behind the curtain.
The death of Galway nightlife isn't an accident it is the direct result of broken urban planning, archaic legislation, and real estate gridlock. We are watching massive, structurally sound assembly spaces sit completely vacant or get converted into corporate blocks, while the social fabric of our city is ripped apart.
Locals and the massive student populations at University of Galway and ATU are left with severely overcrowded late bars not fit for purpose, increased violence, vanishing dance floors, and an early-closing culture that pushes thousands of people onto the streets at the exact same time.
We are not just losing places to dance; we are systematically losing
- Safe Social Spaces: Pushing nightlife into unregulated house parties and creating dangerous midnight bottlenecks and traffic on our streets due to uniform, early closing times.
- Creative Opportunities: Students working during college, local DJs, musicians, event staff, and creatives no longer have underground hubs or late-night stages or opportunities to build and build a network for their careers.
- Economic Vitality: A dead nightlife harms our hospitality, limits business opportunities, workforce, discourages tourism, and actively diminishes Galway's appeal as a vibrant city to live and study in.
The government has repeatedly promised to modernise our licensing laws via the Sale of Alcohol Bill, which would introduce dedicated late-night licenses and scrap the crippling €410 nightly court fees that prevent independent venues from surviving. Yet, the legislation remains continually stalled.
What We Demand:
- Immediate Legislative Action: We call on the Department of Justice to fast-track the delayed licensing reforms to allow for sustainable, modern opening hours.
- Local Government Support: We demand that Galway City Council actively protect existing commercial buildings and entertainment spaces from being permanently converted into standard retail or office blocks.
- A Night Mayor for Galway: The appointment of a dedicated Night-Time Economy Advisor to actively advocate for venues, creatives, and safe transport infrastructure already valued in Galway (Galway arts festival, Macnas parade,St Patrick’s parade, Eyre square Christmas market) etc. Galway woukd heavily benefit from large spaces being redeveloped back to original design instead of spend.
Galway deserves a nightlife that matches its global creative reputation. We want our dance floors back, we want our late-night culture protected, and we want action now.
