Dr. Louis Figueroa, a cherished member of our East Brunswick community, is at risk of losing his job due to budget cuts. His role in our school system is invaluable; he oversees crucial student services including counseling, special education, anti-bullying, HIB’s, athletics, and so much more. His dedication goes beyond his professional responsibilities as he also volunteers to coach youth sports teams in the community, and is the ONLY administrator to live in East Brunswick. 

Dr. Figueroa has had a profound impact on many students' lives through his work and genuine care for their well-being. Many parents even have claimed that their child is alive because of him. It is disheartening that such a vital position is being considered for elimination when it directly affects the students most. 

In 2019 alone, school counselors have been reported to help approximately 1 in 5 students facing mental health issues (American School Counselor Association). With the ongoing pandemic, social media usage, stress that comes with school and life, and with these effects on students mental health, now more than ever we need dedicated professionals like Dr. Figueroa. 

We, the residents and constituents, urge the administration to reconsider their decision and prioritize funding towards roles that directly impact student welfare over other less critical areas of expenditure. It is time to stop putting money over the well being of students.
