SAVE CORAL REEF PARK'S ICONIC OAK TREE FROM DESTRUCTION

The Issue

Palmetto Bay residents have once again been dismayed to learn that the Village plans to remove a treasured Oak tree to make way for new park construction. The majestic tree at the entrance of Coral Reef Park has greeted generations of residents near the tennis courts, long predating the Village's incorporation. It provides vital shade and wildlife habitat that help make the park a natural oasis.

Sadly, this is not an isolated incident. In 2021, another of Coral Reef Park's mature trees was cut down for a bridge project, continuing an alarming pattern of disregarding the importance of these stately giants to the park's ecosystem and ambiance. While we support adding park amenities, the Village Manager and Council must find ways to achieve this without needlessly sacrificing the very trees that make the park special.

Even a minor adjustment to the building site for the planned community center could spare the beloved entrance tree. However, Village leadership has summarily dismissed this reasonable idea when raised by concerned citizens. We therefore demand that the Village Manager and Council:

  1. Immediately halt plans to remove the iconic Coral Reef Park entrance tree.
  2. Redesign the community center to preserve the entrance tree and other mature trees.
  3. Enact a policy to prioritize preserving trees in all current and future Village projects.
  4. Improve communication with residents regarding park plans and environmental impacts.

If Palmetto Bay is to remain a beautiful, green community, we must protect our natural treasures from short-sighted decisions. We call on Village leaders to live up to their responsibility as stewards of our environment by exploring alternatives that enhance the park while preserving its cherished trees. Palmetto Bay residents are watching to ensure our voices are heard on this crucial issue.

Please sign to urge the Village Manager and Council to save the majestic Coral Reef Park entrance tree and preserve the verdant beauty that makes our park a true gem. Together we can defend our community's precious trees!
