Save Charlestown High School
The Issue
Charlestown High School is more than a school. It's a community, a support system, a place of opportunity, and a home away from home for countless students and families throughout Boston. The proposal to close Charlestown High School in June 2028 threatens to disrupt not just the education but the lives of students, families, educators, and an entire neighborhood.
Charlestown High School serves a significant population of students with special education needs, offering them consistency, stability, and individualized support. The proposed closure raises pressing concerns about the future of these students.
Where will they go? Will other schools provide the same level of support?
We must not allow our children to become mere statistics in a district decision. Moreover, the Early College and Career Pathways Program is a lifeline for students to earn up to 12 free college credits (that’s 4 classes, a whole semester of college) and gain career experience through a partnership with Bunker Hill Community College and other universities across the city.
For families without the financial means to afford college, this opportunity is life-changing. Dismantling this program would deprive students of crucial educational and career advancement.
Charlestown High School is a choice for students across Boston who seek its unique educational opportunities and welcoming environment. Closing it would eliminate a valuable option that many students and families actively choose.
Importantly, Charlestown High School's educators do more than teach. They advocate for and invest in students' futures, fostering their growth and well-being. The relationships they build are not easily replicated elsewhere.
Charlestown High School is an integral part of our community's fabric. Even if you don't currently have a child attending, this fight matters. Whether you graduated from there, watched generations grow in the neighborhood, or believe every child deserves a supportive school, this fight is our fight.
We are urging Boston Public Schools to:
- Reverse the decision to close Charlestown High School in June 2028.
- Prioritize the stability and well-being of every student, especially those with disabilities.
- Protect the Early College and Career Pathways Program.
- Respect the importance of school choice for students citywide.
- Listen to students, parents, educators, alumni, and our community before making irreversible decisions.
- Invest in improving and strengthening Charlestown High School.
Charlestown, we need to stand together. This isn't just about a school; it's about our children's futures and our community's voice. Sign this petition to save Charlestown High School and ensure a brighter future for our children.
