Petition updateSave Chamberlain ParkCouncil continues wanton destruction of trees!!

We have passed the 25,000 mark on our Save Chamberlain Park petition!  However, the future of this well-used and loved public golf course in Mount Albert is still under debate.

It is not only golfers who are among our supporters. Many climate and environmentally concerned citizens have signed up because they are against the destruction of an historic green space and the potential loss of 1,000 mature as part of the Council’s Master Plan.

Save Chamberlain Park would like to note its support for Honour the Maunga https://www.facebook.com/groups/2657583844304264/permalink/2663355323727116/  and Occupy Garnet Road, both of whom are fighting to stop the removal of 345 exotic trees from Mount Albert.

Auckland has already lost a significant volume of it’s tree canopy. A total of 61.23ha of tree canopy was lost from Waitematā Local Board over 10 years. The loss was made up of 12,879 different detected tree removal ‘events’; meaning a minimum of 12,879 trees were cleared. http://www.knowledgeauckland.org.nz/assets/publications/TR2018-021-Tree-loss-Waitemata-Local-Board-2006-2016.pdf

It feels like this senseless butchery of our environment is endemic in our city and the current council is allowing our Local Board areas to become bereft of an essential green canopy – exotic and native. Who is council listening to in making these seemingly arbitrary and destructive decisions? How many people saying “no” does it take before Council actually listens?
