Peter Haynes told the Herald (17 March 2018) that there were huge savings in putting sports fields at Chamberlain Park ‘because we won’t have to buy other land” and “using fill from earthworks at projects like the Central Interceptor and Central Rail Link” Come on Peter that is a real stretch and you know it because: - there is no spare land to buy and - there is an escalation in costs, not a saving -Watercare and Auckland Transport have not committed to donating fill. In adopting the 2015 masterplan, you said total costs for two sports fields would be $3.5million to $4million , yet your own documents say the cost will be $15m, ($7 million for “fill” and $8 million for the artificial turf). In 2009, College Rifles in Remuera paid $2m for two artificial turf sports fields. In 2018 it costs four times that amount! You remarked that the “fill” could come from the Central Interceptor and Central Rail Link. Where is the evidence for this, Peter? Usually, the fill from these excavations will be pre allocated and purchased from Watercare and Auckland Transport. Chamberlain Park generates $1 million plus per year. Peter, do you really believe there are huge savings to be gained by destroying a revenue-generating asset and replacing it with something that has no additional financial benefit for ratepayers? What you are doing, Peter is putting an unnecessary burden on rate payers at a time when there are many other more pressing priorities. Moreover, the Council’s own statements indicate that there is no shortage of sports fields in your area. If you want to do the local community a favour use the money to sand carpet existing sports fields in the area to improve their usage during winter as per the Local Body Plan.
