Please help the Tuscarora people of NC save the Cedar Point Village & Gravesite. In early June 2024, a housing development in Cedar Point, NC unearthed what State Archaeologists have deemed “the most significant archaeological discovery” in the state of North Carolina. The developers lobbied a state representative to attempt to amend a bill that would’ve made it easier for developers to destroy sites such as that one. Thanks to public outcry from Native Americans and residents alike, they did not succeed. We now ask for your help to save this site indefinitely for future generations to appreciate.
On June 23, 2024 Tuscarora living in and outside of Carteret County alongside Occaneechi Saponi & Algonquin people came together peacefully to pray for the ancestors who were disturbed. Praying at sacred sites such as the one found in Cedar Point is protected by federal law under the Indian Religious Freedom Act of 1978. Women, children and elders were met with violence & brutality from residents of the development.
State and local governments may think it’s more beneficial to allow development to continue, incentivized by the promise of new residents bringing in more tax dollars. However, there’s much more potential to bring in tourism revenue by preserving the site as an outdoor museum, managed in cooperation with the bands of Tuscarora in NC. Losing a site this significant not only historically but In environmental value is unacceptable.
Our wish is to have access to the land for prayer and to educate others on Tuscarora people’s history and continued existence within the state. To preserve this land for all future generations to appreciate. Erasure has been the story of the Tuscarora for too long, by standing in solidarity the past can no longer be erased. Please make any donations via check or cash to Eastern Woodland Protectors or 7 Directions of Service!
