To our City leaders and preservation officials:

We are deeply alarmed by the visible neglect and ongoing deterioration of Brooklyn Borough Hall—one of New York City’s most historic civic buildings.

Built in 1848 and clad in rare Tuckahoe marble, Borough Hall symbolizes Brooklyn’s civic pride and architectural legacy. For 175 years, it has served as the heart of local government and a vital public gathering space.

Today, it is crumbling. Its marble columns are cracked and rust-stained, the steps are covered in graffiti and grinding damage, iron fencing is bent and broken, and trash and dead landscaping surround the building.

There is no public plan or funding in place to restore or protect this landmark.

We, the undersigned, call on the NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS), the Brooklyn Borough President’s Office, and the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) to:

• Conduct a full structural assessment
• Release a detailed, funded restoration plan
• Establish an ongoing program for maintenance, cleaning, and landscaping 
• Restore damaged features, including fencing and stairs
• Prevent further harm with skate deterrents and graffiti protection

Brooklyn Borough Hall deserves better!

We demand immediate action to restore and preserve this historic landmark for future generations.
