While humane non lethal solutions like deceivers (a fence and pipe that modify the dam), and fencing trees are suggested, we would like Elk Island National Park to stick to humane non lethal methods only.
Placing drown traps, coneybear traps, leghold traps, snares, drown traps, etc, is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects because it will kill all sorts of non target animals. And shooting beavers will still leave room for more to move in. Please do not kill the beavers. Removing the dams will not solve the problem. More beavers will move in. There are cruelty free ways to mitigate damage from beaver dams without drowning, shooting, or snap trapping beavers. Non lethal humane methods are far more effective and longer lasting. If the dams must be removed, please do so in a way that does not kill the beavers. Remember beavers might have kits this time of year.
Please only use humane non lethal methods to manage beavers and other wildlife. Here are some resources.
