The Albanese government has announced it will finally introduce local content rules for streaming platforms. This is a win for tens of thousands of workers in front of the camera and behind the scenes - and a win for Australian audiences who deserve to see their lives and stories reflected on screen. I'm still looking into the detail of the legislation, but the early signs are promising.

The many thousands of signatures on this petition demonstrates the groundswell of public support for this issue. I am proud to have stood alongside actors, creatives and thousands of supporters to make this happen.

Last week, I welcomed a delegation of Australian actors and industry figures to Parliament House. Together with other crossbench MPs, we urged the federal government to finally deliver on its three election promises to introduce minimum local content quotas for streaming giants.

I kept up the pressure in Parliament and demanded answers from the government.  As recently as Monday this week, I told Parliament of a screen industry worker who had reached his limits, mentally and financially, because of shrinking work opportunities. The very next day, the government announced its policy shift.

Congratulations to everyone who banded together to help ensure Australian culture, creativity and national identity will remain prominent on our screens.
