Save Austin's Peter Pan Mini Golf

Save Austin's Peter Pan Mini Golf
The Issue
Peter Pan Mini Golf has been a staple of the Austin community since 1948. It is a beloved and iconic landmark in the South Austin scene, and is symbolic old Austin energy: fun, laid-back, and unequivocally weird. With the loss of so many of these mainstays of Austin culture, it is heartbreaking to hear that there is doubt over the future of Peter Pan Mini Golf.
According to local news sources, the future of Peter Pan currently rests in the hands of an unknown trustee who will be appointed to oversee the family trusts that control the land in question. While the owners are hoping to re-signing their current lease, the future for Peter Pan Mini-Golf remains uncertain. Historic landmark preservation status would protect this business for years to come.
We call on the city of Austin to step in and find it in their power to save this local treasure by declaring it a historic landmark with all the protection that designation affords. We cannot save every business in Austin, and we must accept some level of change as the city grows, but the history and benefit of this particular site are too great to lose.
Austin City Council website lists the following regarding citizen petitions: "The people of the city reserve the power of direct legislation by initiative, and in the exercise of such power may propose any ordinance, not in conflict with this Charter, the state constitution, or the state laws except an ordinance appropriating money or authorizing the levy of taxes. Any initiated ordinance may be submitted to the council by a petition signed by qualified voters of the city equal in number to the number of signatures required by state law to initiate an amendment to this Charter."
In the city of Austin, according to Texas State law, the number of signatures in order for a petition to be brought to city council is 20,000.
While an electronic petition does not comply precisely with City of Austin petition requirements, we believe that a great volume of Austin residents attaching their names to this issue will still have an impact on the actions of the City Council.
