Save ATLA Netflix: SOKKA’S CHARACTER ARC STAYS THE SAME AS WELL AS THE REST OF THE STORY.
The Issue
I’m afraid the shareholders at Netflix forgot their core audience is 25-31 years old, based on the 6-11 age range in 2005. I was 11 then and used to think the original animated series was for kids that had an adult element to it but in my latter years I’ve realized it’s an animated series for adults that kids can also watch. That’s what going to get lost in the shuffle if Netflix scraps character arcs and storylines.
As if the idea of a person internally growing for the better is “going too far” in 2024? Sokka’s sexist arc isn’t only his most important one, ITS ALSO THE SHORTEST. That arc lasts 3 episodes. (That’s a reason fans hated the live action from 2010, because there was no redemption for his character. Just monotone, So naturally we didn’t get a chance to grow with nor care about the character.) If Sokka isn’t sexist to later be humbled, how/when does Suki start to like him? Kiss him? Why would Master Pianduo teach Sokka the way of the sword if he was cocky. It was him being humbled, and that humility came from the embarrassment he got from Kyoshi Island.
If you’re a REAL FAN, you know what this is going to lead to.. more storyline butchering later on down the road. It’s bad enough the shows’ original co-creators stepped away from it.. THIS IS WHY. REAL FANS had a problem with Appa’s appearance, the bending effects, and the name mispronunciations in the 2010 film, (these things got improved because us, REAL FANS demanded it) just because we didn’t ridicule their storytelling doesn’t give NETFLIX free reign to butcher that too.
If you can change Sonic and Scooby Doo for your core fans…
