The Grand Urma-Nell Reviving a West Side Chicago Legacy Through Skating Community, and Fun
The Issue
Growing up on the West Side of Chicago, I remember the vibrant energy of skating at The Grand Rollerena, a landmark that was once the heart of our community at 106 S Laramie Ave in South Austin. This rink was more than just a place to skate; it was a sanctuary for youth, a safe haven away from the challenges of city life, and a gathering spot where friendships blossomed and memories were made. Today, this iconic location no longer serves its former purpose, but its spirit deserves to be revived. I witnessed firsthand what the loss of neighborhood skating means to our community . Observing young children today, like a 7- or 8-year-old attempting to skate on the harsh concrete of Madison Street, reminded me how urgently our community needs safe, welcoming recreation spaces
South Austin, like much of the West Side of Chicago, lacks safe, year-round accessible recreational spaces. Outdoor parks are often closed for half the year due to weather. Meanwhile, our youth are left with limited options for safe, constructive activities. Our youth reserve safe places to develop friendships, participate in physical activities, and experience the joy of roller skating just as I did as a kid on the West Side and still do to this day.
Our vision is to establish THE GRAND URMA-NELL, a modern roller-skating and community recreation center in Chicago's West Side corridor . While the final location has not yet been determined. our serving the community remains unchanged.
This initiative is about more than opening a roller rink. It is about honoring the legacy of Grand celebrating the memory of my mother Urma Nell Fields and creating a lasting community institution where generations can com together through skating, music, mentorship, and recreation .
With community support, we can bring this vision to life and create a safe, vibrant gathering place that celebrates our history while investing in our future.
