Stop the Ecological and Mining Destruction of Chios
We issue an urgent international call to protect Volissos, the capital of the Amani region on the island of Chios, Greece — the heart of a Natura 2000 protected area, now threatened by an unprecedented ecological disaster.
On August 12, 2025, a massive wildfire devastated nearly 8000 hectares around Volissos, leaving behind scorched land, destroyed homes, and ancient forests reduced to ashes.
Although no definitive conclusions have been reached to date, suspicions remain regarding the origin of the fire. An interpretation of satellite data published in a local newspaper (link below) even suggests that the fire may have had multiple sources, suggesting an intentional and coordinated operation. In such a context of uncertainty, public outrage continues to grow.
To prevent conspiracy theories from spreading, the people of Amani need an independent investigation. We expect responses from the volunteer firefighters shortly.
The fire spared the village of Volissos itself, contrary to public statements made by MP Konstantinos Rymikis in Kathimerini, who falsely claimed the village was completely destroyed. This is clear misinformation.
A Social and Economic Tragedy
In addition to the ecological devastation, the fire has caused severe economic losses for the local population. Ancient olive groves, vineyards, beehives, and goat herds — the pillars of the regional economy — were severely damaged or destroyed. This loss threatens traditional agriculture and the livelihoods of many families, deepening social vulnerability in an already struggling area.
A Toxic Mining Threat
Residents now fear that the fire was used to clear the area for the forced development of an antimony mine — a highly toxic heavy metal — against the will of the people. This project would endanger groundwater, local ecosystems, public health, and the long-term sustainability of the entire region.
This industrial plan violates:
- The protected status of the Natura 2000 zone
- The democratic will of the local population
- The fundamental right to a healthy and safe environment
A Forgotten Population
For years, the people of Amani have been living in growing neglect and precarity, especially the elderly. Today, the most vulnerable are without support, without hope, and without help, while the land around them lies in ashes and uncertainty.
We demand:
1. Immediate suspension of any mining project in the Amani region
2. An independent international investigation into the causes of the August 12 fire
3. Full respect for Natura 2000 protections
4. Direct and urgent aid for the affected residents, especially the most vulnerable
5. A European and national reforestation fund with biodiversity-safe methods and local support
Why this matters
Volissos is more than a village. It is a place of memory — associated with Homer — a living, ancient land of immense cultural and environmental value. Its destruction, whether by fire or by profit-driven policy, would be a crime against Europe's natural, historical, and human heritage.
Sign this petition to demand that the Greek government and European institutions take responsibility.
