The Issue
We, the undersigned request that the Algonquin College Board of Governors and Algonquin College President allow the Perth Campus to remain open and its regular programming to continue.
On Friday, January 10, 2025 Algonquin College announced that it plans to close Perth Campus by August 2026 in order to recover from a massive deficit.
Algonquin College Perth Campus provides post-secondary education opportunities for students in Perth, Carleton Place, Smiths Falls and beyond. This campus also hosts students from all across Canada and internationally. Programs offered include Heritage Carpentry & Joinery, Business Agriculture and Practical Nursing: all of which lead students to careers in the local area and are in high demand nation-wide. Programs may continue at the Ottawa campus. However these programs are not well-suited to the large suburban Ottawa campus, that lacks critical space and community connections that allow these programs to thrive.
The closure of the Perth Campus would result in lost jobs for Faculty and Support Staff, and the loss of opportunity for local students to receive an education without removing themselves from the community. Access to post-secondary education in rural communities is crucial to their economic resilience, allowing local residents to stay in their community while upgrading their skills. Algonquin College Perth has also become a community hub, hosting continuing education courses for professionals & community members, as well as markets for local artists and craftspeople.
Closing the Perth campus does not have a single benefit to students, to the community or the offered programs being relocated. We request that this decision be reconsidered and that the Perth campus continue to operate as it has for decades. On February 24, 2025 a board meeting will take place which will determine the fate of Algonquin College Perth campus. This petition will be sent to the board to demonstrate the support for preserving the Perth campus.
