Save Alamo Ranch: Stop Via plans for the Placement of the Alamo Ranch bus station

Save Alamo Ranch: Stop Via plans for the Placement of the Alamo Ranch bus station
The Issue
We, the undersigned residents and concerned citizens of the Alamo Ranch neighborhood, hereby submit this petition to express our collective concerns and objections regarding the proposed placement of a Via bus station in our community. While understanding the importance of public transportation, we believe that the chosen location (Alamo Ranch & Lonestar…across from the daycare) warrants reconsideration for several reasons:
1. Fiscal Responsibility and Community Support:
It has come to our attention that there has been no indication of community demand for this bus station. Given the lack of demonstrated need, we are concerned about the unnecessary expenditure of taxpayer dollars on a project that does not align with the wishes or requirements of the community it serves. We request a transparent evaluation of the financial implications and the justification for utilizing public funds for a project that is not community-driven.
2. Preservation of Tree Canopy:
The Alamo Ranch neighborhood is cherished for its beautiful tree canopy, contributing to our quality of life and the environmental well-being of our community. We request Via Metropolitan Transit and the City of San Antonio to consider the potential impact on the existing trees and the necessity to protect this valuable natural resource. Make that area a park!
3. Traffic Congestion and Parking Challenges - Lonestar and Alamo Ranch Parkway:
The anticipated increase in traffic from commuters using the bus station raises concerns about congestion and parking challenges. Given the current high volume of cars due to daily work commutes, we request that Via Metropolitan Transit, Bexar County, and the City of San Antonio thoroughly assess and address these potential issues to ensure the continued livability of our neighborhood.
4. Safety Concerns Near Schools and daycares:
With schools in close proximity and directly near one daycare and one middle school, safety is a paramount concern. An expected increase in foot traffic and the potential influx of individuals commuting into the area necessitate a comprehensive safety assessment. We urge Via Metropolitan Transit and the City of San Antonio to prioritize the safety and well-being of our community, especially in areas near educational institutions and choose a location that is not buried in the neighborhood and more accessible to all.
We, the undersigned, request that Via Metropolitan Transit, in collaboration with the City of San Antonio, reevaluates the proposed location and explores alternative sites that address these concerns while also considering the responsible use of taxpayer money. Striking a balance between the benefits of public transportation and the unique characteristics of the Alamo Ranch neighborhood, along with fiscal prudence, is crucial for fostering a positive relationship between Via Metropolitan Transit, Bexar County, the City of San Antonio, and our community.
Write: District 6 Councilwoman Melissa Cabello Havrda - Chair of the City Council Public Safety Committee
Thank you for your attention to our concerns. We look forward to a collaborative effort to find a solution that benefits both Via Metropolitan Transit, the City of San Antonio, and the Alamo Ranch neighborhood.
