Save Afterword Tavern & Shelves

Save Afterword Tavern & Shelves
The Issue
Kansas City, renowned for its rich cultural and social heritage, stands at a pivotal moment as one of its beloved bars, Afterword Tavern & Shelves, is at risk of closure. This iconic bar, which has served as a hub for friendship, celebration, and community engagement, has been sold to a new owner with intentions of closing it to pave the way for a new venture, targeting exclusive community access. This shift threatens to erase a significant piece of our city's communal fabric.
The bar is more than just a place to grab a drink; it is a symbol of inclusivity and togetherness where people from all walks of life come together, share stories, and create lasting memories. The atmosphere it fosters is a true reflection of Kansas City's diverse and welcoming nature. Afterword was nominated for multiple “Best of KC 2025” Pitch awards, notably receiving runner up for “Best Bar Staff.”
This proposed change undermines the spirit of the community, leaving many patrons and employees without a place they call home. Afterword has not only been a local favorite for many years, but it has also contributed to the local economy by providing jobs and supporting literacy for numerous book clubs with members of all ages and backgrounds. Afterword is the only bookstore bar in Kansas City, providing a unique gathering spot inclusive to all, offering a warm, cozy, and salon-style third-space where folks can read, write, and collaborate. This safe environment must be preserved.
Closing Afterword would mean losing a cherished gathering place that stands as a testament to Kansas City's vibrant nightlife and social scene. Instead of a new concept, we propose preserving the bar in its current form, allowing it to continue offering its unique charm and acting as an accessible space for everyone.
We urge the new owner to reconsider the decision to close the bar. Let's work together to find a solution that honors the history and significance of this beloved establishment while also fulfilling the vision of a thriving business.
Join us in our effort to save this piece of Kansas City’s identity. By signing this petition, you show your support for preserving our community's love of books and this beloved Crossroad's bar. #SaveAfterword
