CONTACT CAR WASH TENANT NOW
It was an honor and surprise to meet Glendale Mayor Ardy Kassakhian on Tuesday night, 6/02. He was excited to hear about the community effort to save Acapulco and immediately said, “We don’t want the same thing to happen to Acapulco that happened to the original Bob’s Big Boy here in Glendale,” referring to how it was demolished in ‘89.
We discussed how Burbank now has the oldest surviving Bob’s Big Boy, and Glendale has the oldest surviving Acapulco, which is also believed to be the oldest Mexican restaurant in Glendale. The mayor spent over ten minutes talking with me, expressed interest in eventually finding out more about the restaurant’s customer base (who it's serving, and where they're each coming from), and he strongly agreed that new drive-through restaurants are increasingly being denied in cities, and that drive-through car washes should also be subject to the same restrictions. He said he's been to Acapulco many times, and that he’ll be coming again next week.
It was also great meeting Councilman Alek Bartrosouf, who filmed a video at Acapulco last week to help raise awareness. Congratulations to all three City Council candidates I endorsed on their victories—Dan, Elen, and Alek!
Petitions historically save closing restaurants about 1% of the time, so what this community has accomplished so far is part of the “1% miracle.” I’m grateful for the overwhelming support from both the community and local leadership, and I know the community will continue fighting until this real-life movie gets the happy ending it deserves.

P.S. The car wash application is still pending while the official appeals are being reviewed. So please consider mailing a respectful letter to the prospective car wash tenant. If he pulls out, then Acapulco gets to stay. More details below:
