Le jeudi 27 février était entérinée la suspension du Master Langues et Cultures Celtiques en Contact pour la rentrée 2025. 

Cette décision n’a même pas été officiellement communiquée aux étudiants du Master, qui n’ont par ailleurs pas été consultés en amont de ce vote. Pourtant sensibles à la préservation de leur domaine d’étude déjà fragilisé, celles et ceux qui sont directement concernés par la suspension regrettent de voir que ce Master a servi de symbole politique pour une lutte entre deux syndicats étudiants, sans que leur voix soit entendue en priorité. 

Néanmoins, à l’heure où les locuteurs de breton ont baissé de moitié en six ans, où la France refuse toujours de ratifier la Charte Européenne des langues régionales ou minoritaires, et où le terme “celtique” fait l’objet de nombreuses problématiques politiques et identitaires, il est plus que jamais urgent de pouvoir garantir un accès à un tel enseignement interdisciplinaire et scientifiquement rigoureux. 

Les études celtiques, que d’aucuns pourraient juger obscures, ne sont pas pour autant désuètes et indignes d’intérêt. Où en France - et ailleurs dans le monde- peut-on trouver un Master qui offre un si riche parcours non seulement linguistique, proposant des cours de breton, gallois et irlandais modernes et médiévaux, de latin et d’ancien français, mais également historique, archéologique, littéraire et sociolinguistique, et dont les étudiants, pour beaucoup, arrivent à obtenir un contrat doctoral non seulement à Brest, mais également à Limerick, Princeton ou encore Harvard ? En outre, nous tenons à rappeler qu’en mai dernier, le colloque de l’Association of Celtic Students s’est déroulé à Brest, et a rassemblé pas moins de 130 étudiants et intervenants venus non seulement des six nations celtiques, mais également des Etats-Unis, de l'Italie, de Pologne, des Pays-Bas ou encore du Japon, tous unis par l’intérêt pour les langues, l’Histoire, les traditions, la littérature et autres domaines culturels des pays celtiques.

Par ailleurs, si ses propres professeurs se résignent, de guerre lasse, à la suspension du Master, c’est qu’ils ont dû affronter des refus de demandes, pourtant réitérées, de fonds supplémentaires et d’ouvertures de postes. De plus, l’argument du nombre d’inscrits n’est pas recevable : s’en tenir à une logique comptable devrait alors inciter l’université à fermer d’autres filières. 

Si nous sommes bien conscients des difficultés budgétaires de l’université, nous pensons qu’il est inopportun de suspendre ce Master dont la spécificité, qui repose sur l’excellence du CRBC, fait aussi la renommée de l’UBO.

On Thursday 27 February, the suspension of the Master's programme in Celtic Languages and Cultures in Contact for the start of the 2025 academic year was confirmed.

This decision was not even officially communicated to the Master's students, who were not consulted prior to the vote. The students directly affected by the suspension are very concerned about the preservation of their already fragile field of study, and regret that the Master's programme has been used as a political symbol for a battle between two students' syndicates, without their voices being heard in priority.

Nevertheless, at a time when the number of Breton speakers has dropped by half in six years, when France is still refusing to ratify the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages, and when the term ‘Celtic’ is the subject of numerous political and identity-related issues, it is more urgent than ever to be able to guarantee access to such interdisciplinary and scientifically rigorous teaching.

Celtic studies, which some might consider obscure, are not necessarily obsolete or unworthy of interest. Where else in France - or anywhere else in the world - could one find a Master's degree that offers such a rich curriculum not only in linguistics, with courses in modern and medieval Breton, Welsh and Irish, Latin and Old French, but also in history, archaeology, literature and sociolinguistics, and whose students, many of them, manage to get fundings for their PhD not only in Brest, but also in Limerick, Princeton and Harvard? We would also like to point out that last May, the Association of Celtic Students held a conference in Brest, bringing together no fewer than 130 students and speakers from not only the six Celtic nations, but also the United States, Italy, Poland, the Netherlands and Japan, all united by an interest in the languages, History, traditions, literature and other cultural areas of the Celtic countries.

Moreover, if its own professors and lecturers have resigned themselves to the suspension of the Masters programme, it is because they have had to face up to repeated refusals of requests for additional funding and new posts. What's more, the argument of the number of applications is not acceptable: sticking to an accounting logic should then encourage the university to close other courses.

While we are well aware of the university's budgetary difficulties, we believe that it would be inappropriate to suspend this Master's degree, the specific nature of which, based on the excellence of the Centre for Breton and Celtic Research, has also made the University of Western Brittany famous.
