Sauvons la musicothérapie au CUSM!

Nous, soussignés, sommes les membres de la chorale MusiArt et des groupes de musicothérapie de l’Institut Allan Memorial, créés pour soutenir les patients psychiatriques du Centre universitaire de santé McGill (CUSM). 

Le mardi 20 janvier, 2026, nous avons été informés qu'après 27 ans d'existence, notre chorale et nos groupes de musicothérapie seraient contraints de se dissoudre en raison de coupes budgétaires au sein du département de psychiatrie du CUSM et du retrait du soutien de la Fondation de l'Hôpital général de Montréal. 

Nous sommes dévastés par cette nouvelle. La musicothérapie est un aspect essentiel de nos soins psychologiques. La recherche clinique a prouvé à maintes reprises que la musicothérapie favorise une meilleure santé mentale chez les patients psychiatriques en général, en soulageant les symptômes, en créant un sentiment d'appartenance à une communauté, en apportant une structure, en renforçant la confiance en soi et l'autocompassion, et en offrant divers autres bienfaits physiques et psychologiques. Chacun d'entre nous, quelle que soit notre situation en matière de santé mentale, en est venu à considérer la chorale comme un espace sûr, un lieu de joie et un forum de soutien mutuel. Pour beaucoup d'entre nous, elle a été la seule et unique lueur d'espoir dans une période très sombre. 

Notre chorale a une longue et fière histoire au CUSM. En près de trois décennies, nous avons sorti trois albums de compositions originales, nous nous sommes produits en Ontario, à l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard et en Nouvelle-Écosse, nous avons fait une tournée en France et nous avons donné régulièrement des concerts à l'Hôpital général de Montréal, dans les grands espaces de l'hôpital, ainsi que dans le service de psychiatrie lui-même. Nous sommes extrêmement fiers de ce que cette chorale nous a permis d'accomplir, et tout aussi reconnaissants pour tout ce qu'elle nous a apporté, notamment les grands progrès qu'elle nous a permis de faire dans notre rétablissement. 

Nous dépendons du travail acharné des musicothérapeutes du CUSM, notamment Julie Migner-Laurin, dont le leadership et le dévouement inlassables nous réunissent chaque semaine. Sans elle, la chorale ne peut tout simplement pas continuer d'exister. D'autres patients, tels que les membres du groupe de musicothérapie du Allan Memorial, du programme de jour, du cercle de musicothérapie pour femmes, ainsi que les participants aux séances individuelles, bénéficient également grandement des services fournis par Julie. 

Et pourtant, le CUSM et la Fondation du HGM ont décidé de supprimer le poste de Julie et de mettre fin au contrat d'un autre musicothérapeute de l'Institut Allan Memorial, à compter de la fin de notre dernier concert (qui est désormais prévu le 19 mars, au Allan). 

Nous vous demandons de nous aider à sauver notre chorale et les programmes de musicothérapie du Allan Memorial en vous joignant à nous pour condamner cette décision très soudaine et très imprudente. Veuillez manifester votre soutien en signant cette pétition, par laquelle nous demandons au CUSM, à la Fondation de l'Hôpital général de Montréal et au Ministère de la santé de rétablir le financement de notre chorale et des programmes de musicothérapie du Allan Memorial.

La chorale MusiArt et les groupes de musicothérapie nous ont montré de manière concrète à quel point l'union fait la force. Joignez votre voix à la nôtre.

Save Music Therapy at the MUHC!

We, the undersigned, are the members of the MusiArt Choir and the Music Therapy Programs at the Allan Memorial Institute, formed to support psychiatry patients at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). 

On Tuesday, January 20th, 2026, we were informed that after 27 years, our choir and groups will be forced to disband, due to budget cuts at the MUHC psychiatry department and a withdrawal of support from the Montreal General Hospital Foundation.

We are devastated by this news. Music therapy is a critically important aspect of our psychological care. Clinical research has proven time and again that music therapy promotes better mental health outcomes for psychiatry patients across the board, providing symptom relief, community, structure, self-confidence, self-compassion, and a variety of other physical and psychological benefits. Each and every one of us, no matter where we may find ourselves in our mental health journey, has come to rely on the choir as a safe space, a place to be joyous, and a forum for mutual support. For many of us, it has been the one and only bright light during very dark times.

Our choir has a long and proud history at the MUHC. Over nearly three decades, we have released three albums of original compositions, performed in Ontario, PEI, and Nova Scotia, toured France, and performed regular concerts at the Montreal General Hospital, in the hospital’s larger spaces, as well as on the psychiatry ward itself. We are extremely proud of what this choir has allowed us to accomplish, and just as grateful for all it has given us, including the great strides it has allowed us to make in our recovery.

We depend on the hard work of the MUHC’s music therapists, including Julie Migner-Laurin, whose tireless leadership and dedication brings us together every week. Without her, the choir simply cannot continue to exist. Other patients, such as the members of the Allan Memorial Music Therapy Group, the Day Program, the Women’s Music Therapy Circle as well as individual sessions, also benefit greatly from the services that Julie provides. 

And yet the MUHC and the MGH Foundation have decided to cut Julie’s position and terminate the contract of another music therapist at the Allan Memorial Institute, effective at the end of our last concert, (which is now scheduled for March 19th, at the Allen Memorial).

We ask that you please help save our choir and the Allan Memorial Music Therapy Programs by joining us in condemning this very sudden, and very unwise, decision. Please indicate your support by signing this petition, by which we call on the MUHC, the Montreal General Hospital Foundation, and the Ministère de la santé to restore funding for our choir and the Music Therapy Programs at the Allan Memorial. The MusiArt Choir and groups have shown us firsthand how there can be great strength in numbers. Please add your voice to ours.
