Less than 30 people wrote comments yesterday, April 1, to UCSC's online scoping meeting.
There were people who shared about the inadequate conditions on UCSCs campus now before the increase. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT
each person who reads this takes 5 minutes before April 8 to WRITE an email. People who wrote in said UCSC did not keep the promises they made when they planned the last increase in students! What would make us think the UC will keep their promises now?  One of the promises they reneged on was supplying the housing they planned. WE CANNOT LET THIS HAPPEN AGAIN! This is a serious matter. Santa Cruz already has too many negative impacts from UCSC students. Many people know of the hardship, noise, messes, high cost of rents, traffic, as well as students making life hard on many residents. These things need to be noted in UCSCs report or the town of Santa Cruz has no defense to keep UCSCs growth from getting out of hand.
You are at home. There is no excuse not to write. Here is the email eircomment@ucsc.edu. Your name will not be shared. This is a fight we need to win. Tell your neighbors and friends to write.  Anyone can write. People do not need to live in Santa Cruz to email. We need thousands of people to write. The sooner we write the better. Contact your friends and relatives. The more time and money the UC Regents put into their planning the more they will want to move ahead with the large increase of more students in Santa Cruz.
You can include some of the following sentences and add your own words. Non-form letters have more of an impact.
To: UCSC
I am not in support of UCSC growing 9,000 additional students.
(Pick from the following reasons and/or add your own reasons:)

The town of Santa Cruz is the smallest host town of any UC. Tourism makes our already impacted town swell on the weekends. The weekends are when students are not in class. There is no room for
9,000 additional people in Santa Cruz.

Santa Cruz is not the right UC to expand. UC Merced would be more appropriate or spread around the increase to at least 6 of your other campuses.

The noise and congestion of adding more students in the town of Santa Cruz is not supported at all by the community. Care about your host towns!

UCSC has many problems due to the high cost of living in Santa Cruz. Do not make an existing problem into a worse scenario. Students need to be in an affordable community. Not one that is already overcrowded and has one of the highest costs of living in the nation.

The town of Santa Cruz does not have the infrastructure to support 9,000 more students or people of any type.

The housing that is provided by UCSC is expensive and many students find it cheaper to crowd several students into a small apartment in town or put as many students as possible into a rented house. More students increases rents in Santa Cruz and decreases the supply of affordable housing in the town of Santa Cruz which desperately needs affordable housing.

It makes no sense to increase UCSC when Merced can easily increase enrollment at a lower cost to the UC and a lower cost to students as well as their families. UCSC already has 19,457 students enrolled. 28,500 would be too many even if increased incrementally.

Colleges will have more classes online which will help save money for the colleges. This will alleviate some of the need for more students on campus.

There are fewer students coming to college in the next number of years due to the decrease in the birthrates an increase of 9,000 students is not needed especially in an impacted area.

9,000 more people in Santa Cruz will endanger the natural habits many in Santa Cruz work hard to maintain. UCSC is known as a university that cares about the environment. Please show it by increasing several other UCs not UC Santa Cruz.

Please take the recommendations of the citizens of Santa Cruz and do not expand UCSC.

***You have a voice let it be heard regarding your concerns for UCSC increasing enrollment by 9,000 additional students for a total of 28,500 students!. WRITE eircomment@ucsc.edu today!
