Remove the statue of Junípero Serra @ SLO Mission

The Issue

The California Mission system is an extended monument to colonialism, racism, genocide, and enslavement. While we must acknowledge the existence and history of the San Luis Obispo Mission, it is disrespectful to the Obispeño Chumash—and the other Indigenous people enslaved to create monuments to European religion—to have the founder of the Missions, Junípero Serra, enshrined in statue form, looking over the Mission Plaza. We call on the SLO City Council and Mayor’s Office to replace the statue with a monument honoring the stolen Indigenous land we occupy today. The replacement should be approved by local Indigenous communities and be followed by a promise of action to improve the lives of Indigenous people in California today.
