3 years ago, I launched an effort to rename a street in my city of San Jose after Barack Obama.
To get this done, a group of incredible community advocates came together to form the Committee for Barack Obama Boulevard.
In August 2020, after the Committee put in a ton of work, we submitted an application to the City of San Jose to rename portions of Bird Avenue (north of I-280), South Montgomery Street, South Autumn Street, & North Autumn Street to Barack Obama Boulevard.
Yesterday afternoon, the San Jose City Council voted 11-0 to approve our proposal!!
[The item was 10.1.a on the Council agenda: https://sanjose.legistar.com/MeetingDetail.aspx?ID=825858&GUID=54BD280E-CD69-4494-A58A-BA3AE7045371&Search= The video of it can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_ZEqwg9fn4
Now that we've achieved this key milestone, the final step should be ensuring the new street signs get paid for and put up.
Thanks to many of you, we've already raised over $11,000 toward this effort through our fiscal sponsor, the African American Community Service Agency. Your donations are going to costs such as the City of San Jose's application fee and to the new street signs.
Yet we need to raise more money to reach the mountaintop.
If you can please give whatever amount you're comfortable with, we'd certainly appreciate it!
