2/22/22 Laid Off and Stressed Out Mental Health Day & Rally : SFUSD

The Issue

Four months ago, we started this petition to request a staff Mental Health Day from the San Francisco Unified School District Leadership. ( see the original petition below).

There was no response from SFUSD Leadership.

We watched Oakland Unified staff get a Mental Health Day while  SFUSD  leaders failed to address the Mental Health needs of SFUSD staff.

So go ahead and take a Mental Health Day off 2/22/22  if you need it.

So much is happening. Staff is under more and more stress.

  • Enrollment capacity for elementary schools has been cut. Schools such as Lakeshore, Cobb, Sheridan, and Rosa Parks have been impacted and more.
  • In addition, 476 UESF staff are subject to layoffs this year.
  • The Para R Series may be eliminated.
  • We need more nurses and social workers for our students.
  • and more ...

Join your fellow colleagues in solidarity for a Rally at 555 Franklin  2/22/22 at 5 pm

WEAR RED!

2/22/22 is also the same day as the  SFUSD School Board votes our our UESF/ SFUSD TATentative Agreement)

Bring a sign share your own concerns!

In solidarity, let's demand more. We all deserve much better than this.

ORIGINAL PETITION

Dear San Francisco Unified School District Leaders,

This petition is to request that the San Francisco Unified School District have a Mental Health Days off for the whole community in Spring 2022.  These days could be an extension of a scheduled holiday or an extension of Spring Break. In addition these days off could be All Day Professional Development Days for Paras.

Here are the top 10 reasons why :

1. The certificated staff is exhausted and they are doing double duty as classroom substitutes and people are resigning.

2. The Admin are exhausted from trying to run schools and the district and also doing triple duty as site contact tracers and classroom substitutes.

3. The students are stressed and many are grieving for COVID related reasons and could use a mental health day. It would be an opportunity for mental health education and discussion at all the school sites the week leading to the days off.

4. Paras often find attending Professional Development a hardship. This would  them ALL to attend a PD and give them tools to do their vital jobs without loss of time or pay.

5. Teachers in Virginia got a whole WEEK off for mental health.  Why can't we have this also in SFUSD?  Also New Hanover County Schools and many many more districts around the country are give Mental Health time off to educators.

6. Many many people are taking Mental Health days off anyway it has been a nightmare trying to find substitutes al all the sites.

7. Teachers on Special Assignment have just been redeployed to the classroom. Some have not taught for years.  Also, first year teachers did their student teaching virtually and this is their first time teaching in-person. This would give them all additional them time to regroup, reflect, and recharge.

8. We do not lose ADA because our current year funding is been based on last year's attendance.

9. The district could save money on utilities.

10. It is the right and humane thing since we are all educating during a worldwide pandemic (apocalypse).
