Beyond Enraged: "City attorney’s office data obtained through a records request revealed an 83 percent spike this September in prosecutions for illegal lodging and encroachment, which penalize homeless San Diegans for staying in tents and blocking sidewalks. "For many, that’s meant days in county jail and legal cases that have upended lives. Those who’ve avoided arrest describe near-constant orders from police to move elsewhere as they await the arrival of crews who power-wash areas dominated by homeless camps." The resources being deployed daily by our City to ticket, arrest, and jail Unsheltered San Diegans and confiscate, dispose of and store their belongings could be redirected to operating SafeCamp and SafePark villages in the Qualcomm/SDCCU Stadium parking lot. This would give San Diegans one place they can go to volunteer and donate goods, as they did in 2007, when 15k people displaced by wildfires were allowed to camp and stay in their vehicles/RVs. The City created this Manmade Housing Disaster by choosing to replace 10k low income housing units with market-rate/luxury development since 2010. Time to pay the bill.
