Answer...Apple Valley Animal Shelter (AVAS)
This update was written by Veronica...
AVAS killed sweet Stella (#224106) today! I personally saw her last week on 2/14 and she was friendly, calm and gentle. She was an intact female, kenneled with two intact males (Moo Shu #224107 and Amadeus #224108). They were left together in the kennel over the 3 day weekend, while the shelter was closed. A rescue tried to pull Stella today, and AVAS told the rescue that she was aggressive, so the Rescue backed out. That was Stella’s death sentence! She was punished for being locked up with two intact males, with no supervision for 3 days. What happened to that sweet girl in those 3 days that would make her aggressive all of a sudden? AVAS needs to be held responsible for killing this innocent soul, due to no fault of her own.

Thank you Veronica for providing this update on SBC dogs and cats. I find it so hard to believe that an animal pound would place intact male DOGS with an intact female. Then, suggest the female is AGGRESSIVE knowing she was kenneled with two intact male dogs. I contend the female was SCARED to be caged with two intact males. I believe her behavior was not aggression but rather fear. Sadly, AVAS does not have a licensed animal behavioral specialist on their staff so they would never know the difference. Think about it. They don't even know better than to put intact animals in the same kennels. THEY DO NOT KNOW BETTER.
In my opinion, placing intact animals together in the same kennel is a DEATH sentence for at least one of the animals. Who is the director of this animal pound? Who in their right mind would ever allow unfixed dogs in the same kennel? Whoever allowed this needs to be reviewed by a community oversight committee because it doesn't look like the Town Manager has any courage to stand up against these employees who continue to make mistake after mistake after mistake. I feel like we are all being "punked" because no one can really be this uneducated. And to think they are getting paid with our tax-dollars. I mean I honestly think my nephew who is in 3rd grade would know better than to put three unfixed animals in the same kennel. Does anyone at Apple Valley Animal Shelter know what they are doing? It continues to get more clear that SBC should NOT extend their contract with Apple Valley Animal Shelter. Instead, SBC needs to send animals to ANY OTHER shelter that practices humane management procedures.
Last week, the Apple Valley Town Manager publicly encouraged Apple Valley residents to take stray animals to any other shelter besides AVAS. He said by taking stray animals to ANY other shelter the animals have a better chance of living. Why would a Town Manager say something like this? It's almost like something is forcing the Town Manager to double talk.
How can SBC justify awarding AVAS a renewed contact? We must do all we can to BLOCK this contract renewal. The Town Manager knows they can't handle it. What's there to discuss? The SBC Board must vote NO RENEWAL.
