Nosotros, las organizaciones comunales, residentes del Distrito de Cobano y amantes del medio ambiente, expresamos nuestra OPOSICION por la situación actual del río Ario, que se encuentra amenazado por la extracción de materiales de parte de una empresa privada quien solicita una concesión de extracción de material en cauce de dominio público por un tiempo de 10 años.

El río Ario es mucho más que un cuerpo de agua para nosotros, representa un ecosistema valioso que alberga una biodiversidad única y es vital para nuestras vidas y las de las futuras generaciones. Reconocemos su importancia como fuente de agua para consumo humano por su proximidad del campo de pozos de AYA, actividades agrícolas y hábitat de numerosas especies, también esta zona es sumamente frágil, con bosque hasta la orilla del rio y es parte clave de conexión de corredor biológico entre la cuenca alta y cuenca baja del rio. La parte oeste colinda con la Reserva de Vida Silvestre Caletas Ario y es parte de su zona de amortiguamiento, cinturón ecológico esencial para la conservación. 

Según el II Canje de Deuda por Naturaleza entre Estados Unidos y Costa Rica, la zona de los rios Ario y Bongo son considerados como sitios prioritarios para la conservación. Las variaciones en la elevación, los suelos y las condiciones climáticas presentes favorecen la existencia de una alta diversidad de hábitats con aproximadamente 335.000 especies terrestres, que representan un 67% de las especies descritas para Costa Rica y un 2,6% de la biodiversidad mundial. Esta sobresaliente variedad de especies, tanto residentes como migratorias, incluye algunas que son raras, endémicas o se hallan en peligro de extinción. La extracción de agregados en las inmediaciones del río Ario generaría impactos negativos significativos y irreversibles , incluyendo la erosión de las riberas, la alteración del curso natural del río y la amenaza a la flora y fauna autóctona. Estos efectos ponen en peligro la estabilidad, el equilibrio de este ecosistema .

Por lo tanto, solicitamos a las autoridades pertinentes que tomen medidas inmediatas para detener y regular la extracción de materiales en esta área y en todas las cuencas de los ríos del Distrito de Cobano. 

Instamos a la implementación de políticas que promuevan prácticas sostenibles y la preservación de los ríos para las generaciones actuales y futuras.

Con esta petición, solicitamos respetuosamente:

1 - La anulación inmediata del expediente denominado                          " CONCESIÓN CAUCE DE DOMINIO PÚBLICO RÍO ARIO ", expediente Administrativo D1-0098-2023-Setena y el expediente 2021-CDP-PRI-049 de la Dirección de Geologia y Mina.
2 - La prohibición de extracción de material en todos los ríos del Distrito de Cobano.
3 - El establecimiento de regulaciones que promuevan prácticas de extracción en tajos de manera sostenibles y respetuosas con el medio ambiente.
4 - El fomento de programas de conservación y restauración del entorno del río para preservar su biodiversidad y hábitat natural.

Instamos a la colaboración de todos los ciudadanos, autoridades locales y organizaciones ambientales para proteger el río Ario y demas ríos del Distrito de Cobano y asegurar su preservación para las generaciones presentes y futuras.

Agradecemos sinceramente su apoyo firmando esta petición y uniendo fuerzas para salvar el río Ario de los impactos negativos de la extracción de agregados en cauce de los ríos.

We, the community organizations, residents of the Cobano District and lovers of the environment, express our OPPOSITION for the current situation of the Ario River, which is threatened by the extraction of materials by a private company that requests a concession for the extraction of material in the public domain for a period of 10 years.

The Ario River is much more than a river to us, it represents a valuable ecosystem that is home to unique biodiversity and is vital to our lives and those of future generations. We recognize its importance as a source of water for human consumption due to its proximity to the AYA well field, agricultural activities and habitat of numerous species. This area is also extremely fragile, with forest up to the river bank and is a key part of the corridor connection between the upper and lower basin of the river. The western part of the river borders the Caletas Ario Wildlife Reserve and is part of its buffer zone, an essential ecological belt for conservation.
According to the II Debt for Nature Swap between the United States and Costa Rica, the area of the Ario and Bongo rivers are considered priority sites for conservation. The variations in elevation, soils and climatic conditions present favor the existence of a high diversity of habitats with approximately 335,000 terrestrial species, which represent 67% of the species described for Costa Rica and 2.6% of global biodiversity. . The extraction of aggregates in the vicinity of the Ario River would generate significant and irreversible negative impacts, including the erosion of the banks, the alteration of the natural course of the river and the threat to the native flora and fauna. These effects endanger the stability and balance of this ecosystem.

Therefore, we ask the relevant authorities to take immediate measures to stop and regulate the extraction of materials in this area and in all river basins of the Cobano District.
We urge the implementation of policies that promote sustainable practices and the preservation of rivers for current and future generations.

With this request, we respectfully request:

1- The immediate cancelation of the file called "CONCESSION CAUCE DE DOMINIO PÚBLICO RÍO ARIO", Administrative file D1-0098-2023-Setena and file 2021-CDP-PRI-049 of the Direction of Geology and Mine.
2- The prohibition of material extraction in all rivers in the Cobano District.
3- The establishment of regulations that promote pit extraction practices in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner.
4- The promotion of conservation and restoration programs for the river environment to preserve its biodiversity and natural habitat.

We urge the collaboration of all citizens, local authorities and environmental organizations to protect the Ario River and other rivers in the Cobano District and ensure their preservation for present and future generations.
