Salford says NO TO DATA CENTRES
The Issue
Halo West, the £250m data centre currently being constructed off Liverpool Road next to Salford Community Stadium, will soon become a reality. Approved by Salford City Council, it is being developed by Peel Waters, under Peel Holdings, primarily owned by the Whittaker family. As someone who cherishes our community's welfare, I am deeply concerned about the potential negative impacts this project will have on residents and our environment.
The centre is expected to consume an astronomical amount of electricity, approximately 12–13.5 megawatts, while providing only around 20 permanent jobs. This is not a sustainable model for economic development. Such a disproportionate ratio between resource consumption and job creation does not promise long-term benefits for Salford's local community.
Moreover, Liverpool Road already suffers from heavy congestion, and the additional traffic generated by this facility will exacerbate this issue, leading to increased pollution and noise disturbances. Coupled with the intense pressure on local drainage systems and the potential impact on our precious mosslands, these challenges cannot be ignored. Our beloved community deserves better than to be burdened with these avoidable consequences.
We urge Salford City Council to impose strict regulations on Peel Waters to incorporate sustainable practices into their operations. This includes implementing robust traffic management plans, investing in renewable energy sources, and ensuring that the local environment is preserved and protected.
In partnership, we can push for green building certifications and measures that offset the environmental footprint of Halo West. Additionally, the council should compel Peel Waters to fund community projects that support local infrastructure and environmental resiliency. By prioritizing sustainability, we can make this development a win not just for investors, but for all Salford residents.
Join Your Party Salford in demanding that Salford City Council holds Peel Waters accountable for minimizing the negative impacts of the Halo West data centre. Together, we can create a community that values sustainable development and prioritizes the health and well-being of its people. Sign this petition and let your voice be heard in advocating for a future where economic development is harmonious with environmental stewardship and community prosperity.
Salford, we must choose!
Are we a City of Nature OR A City of Data?
We beat fracking. We can beat this.
