On February 20, 2024, the Saint John Common Council passed a motion to declare 13 acres of Rockwood Park as surplus land without any public consultation. Next, the land will likely be rezoned, sold and developed. Visit our website for a situation update:  https://saverockwoodpark.weebly.com/

We are asking you to write an email to the Saint John Common Council (commonclerk@saintjohn.ca, mayor@saintjohn.ca, john.mackenzie@saintjohn.ca). You can find a form letter on our website. The most important elements to include are as follows:

  • Request that the Mayor and councillors rescind the motion to name #1671 Sandy Point Road surplus land as soon as possible when the full council is present.
  • Encourage the Mayor and councillors to restore public trust by immediately committing to eliciting public opinion through a consultation period for every decision that will have lasting impacts on how the land within the boundaries of Saint John city parks will be used (including but not limited to Rockwood Park). This includes consultation on selling, rezoning, surplus or any other use that has the potential to impact environmental or aesthetic values.
  • Encourage the city to develop a plan for the long-term preservation of the current land mass of Rockwood Park. This may involve putting all of Rockwood Park under a conservation covenant.
  • Encourage the city to develop a plan for 1671 Sandy Point Road. This may include taking advantage of sunk costs by building park facilities or reforesting the cleared land.
