MP’s have joined the call on Sainsbury’s to reconsider their decision! A parliamentary motion calling on supermarkets not to confuse shoppers by abandoning Fairtrade has been backed by a cross party group of over 40 MPs.
Caroline Lucas MP, who sponsored it, says: “To abandon the Fairtrade mark would be an act of huge irresponsibility from a supermarket which claims ‘sourcing with integrity’ as one of its five key values. Supermarkets should be empowering people to shop ethically – not making it harder. Abandoning the Fairtrade mark in favour of in-house certification schemes creates big differences in standards between companies and is confusing for shoppers.”
I couldn’t agree more! Thank you Caroline. Read more here: http://bit.ly/2sWN69f
And it seems Waitrose agree too. They’ve just announced that all of their own-brand tea will now be Fairtrade certified, saying it’s because they know their customers want it. What fantastic news!
