Safety Measures and possible speed reduction on Hwy. Near Falcon Ridge and Cardinal Creek
The Issue
This petition is free to sign.
To the Regional District of Central Okanagan East:
Recognizing the increasing danger on the stretch of highway near Falcon Ridge and Cardinal Creek, we, the undersigned residents and concerned citizens, urgently request action to address the increasing danger along the stretch of highway near Falcon Ridge and Cardinal Creek. Specifically, we are asking for safety improvements in the following areas:
• The section after the hairpin corner when driving out of Kelowna.
• Neighborhoods such as Falcon Ridge and Cardinal Creek.
• The approach to Kelowna before reaching Cardinal Creek.
Our Request:
We propose a reduction in the speed limit and/or the installation of safety measures such as yellow blinking caution lights, large caution signs, or merging lanes for residential areas.
The Problem:
This section of the highway consists of mountainous, winding roads with dangerous blind corners, especially when turning onto the highway from Falcon Rd, Falcon Ridge, and Cardinal Creek. These areas have become high-risk zones due to:
• Vehicles speeding around blind corners at unsafe speeds.
• Frequent accidents and fatalities, including collisions from improper passing and loss of vehicle control.
• Reduced visibility in foggy winter conditions, which exacerbates the dangers of these winding roads.
• The highway being a known wildlife corridor, where many animals are hit by speeding vehicles.
• Traffic going to and from Big White under various weather conditions.
There are 550 homes in the area, with approximately 1,200 residents regularly exposed to these hazardous conditions. The safety of our community and all road users is in jeopardy unless immediate action is taken.
Why This Matters:
The safety of all who use this stretch of road is critical. Given the challenging mountainous terrain and the number of fatal accidents each year, reducing the speed limit and/or installing cautionary measures will help reduce the risk of further accidents and protect both drivers and local wildlife.
Call to Action:
We urge the Regional District of Central Okanagan East to prioritize the safety of this area by reducing the speed limit and/or installing caution lights, signage, or merging lanes to better protect our community.
By signing this petition, we collectively call for immediate action to prevent further fatalities and safeguard the lives of all road users.
