Veterans are contacting the Safer Veterans Australia & No More Zombie Veterans campaign about the recent DVA medicinal cannabis framework changes announced on 16 February.
They are not asking for fewer safeguards, they are asking for safer options, better education, and policies that reflect both science and lived experience.
Here are four key issues veterans and their caregivers are raising:
1. Education & Support
“We need better education and support networks around endocannabinoid health so veterans can use these treatments safely, effectively, and with proper guidance.”
2. Listening to Veteran Experience
“Policy should listen to veterans finding stability and relief. For many living with treatment-resistant trauma, supervised medicinal cannabis has helped reduce medication burden — an important consideration given the Royal Commission’s findings on the risks associated with complex psychiatric medication regimes.”
3. Access to Prescribers
“Reducing the number of authorised prescribers makes it harder for veterans, especially in regional areas, to access care, particularly as participation in supervised medicinal cannabis programs continues to grow.”
4. Stability & Continuity of Care
“Veterans who are stable on a prescribed treatment should not face sudden changes without proper medical support. Policy changes must prioritise continuity of care, clinical oversight, and safe transitions.”
If we truly want better veteran health outcomes, the conversation must focus on evidence, education, and patient stability — not stigma.
