Ridgeway Community started this petition to Safer Streets Iain.Yates@westyorkshire.pcc.pnn and

West Yorkshire Police and Leeds City Council intend to put a 650m stretch of green palisade fencing along the south west boundary of Gledhow Valley Woods approximately 9 inches in front of the existing boundary fence which separates the woods from the gardens of the residential properties that back onto these woods.  The proposed fence is funded by a Safer Streets grant with the intention that it will reduce crime in the area.

Palisade fencing is both intimidating and ugly and has no place in ancient woodland or residential areas yet increasingly it is being used in Leeds.  This is a quick fix solution to tackling crime and there is no evidence that it will reduce crime or benefit the woods and surrounding community.  We believe that its presence potentially creates more problems such as creating a sense of threat in the woods and reducing public use or increasing antisocial behaviours, and that reducing visibility in and out of the woods inhibits soft policing opportunities.  The proposed fence threatens the potential loss of a well used footpath and contributes nothing environmentally.

Please support us in our aim to suspend commencement of this poorly conceived plan and demand that adequate public consultation happens first.  Public engagement to date has been poor and while a stronger boundary may be necessary, alternatives to palisade have not been explored.  This is an opportunity to look at what can tackle crime and antisocial behaviour in the woods, while at the same time ensuring environmental preservation and ecological enhancemnt of this special place.  We believe public money should be used more carefully and for measures that can prove that they are sustainable.

Note to add - ‘Ridgeway community’ campaign represents a small group of residents who are concerned about the impact of the project. It does not represent the views of everyone on the street of Ridgeway. The residents hold various views which are respected by those who started this petition. We want all views to heard within the context of a proper consultation process.
